Did you know that General Motors (GM) played a crucial role in the rise of electric cars in the late 1990s? 🚗⚡ The period from 1996 to 2006 saw a renaissance of electric cars, driven by legal initiatives to reduce emissions. GM's arrival in electric mobility came with the EV1, a groundbreaking vehicle produced between 1996 and 1999. This two-seater electric car was not just an experiment, but a bold statement about the future of transportation. Equipped with a three-phase electric motor powered by 26 lead-acid modules, the first EV1 had a range of 90-120 km. Its successor had 26 nickel-metal hydride modules, which increased the range to 120-160 km. Both versions featured innovative features, such as regenerative braking, aluminum chassis and an impressive drag coefficient of 0.195. However, despite its technical advances and initial success, the EV1 struggled with several problems. It ultimately failed because of high production costs, limited range due to additional features such as headlights and air conditioning, and overheating batteries. GM's decision to discontinue the EV1, despite public outcry and celebrity support, remains a controversial topic to this day. But what does this have to do with weisstechnik?
