Listening to the fantastic Carina Ferreira-Borges from WHO Regional Office for Europe opening this morning’s session on #commercialdeterminants of NCDs at the European Health Forum Gastein. Key take aways for me: 1) We are only 51 weeks away from the UN High Level Meeting on #NCDs - we need to ‘race to the finish’ but also look to the future to do better as we are NOT progressing at the way we should. 2) Why is there no progress? There are multiple reasons including unfortunately that industry interference from big corporate interests make it impossible to put in place what we know works, and what evidence tells us we need to do. 3) What do we need to do? Tackle the actions - the ‘play book’ - by corporate actors to undermine public health policy, and public actions. This means the power assymteries that lead to shaping of political discourse, the misinformation, and the environments in the interests of profits and not the health of our populations.
