During my visit to the Supreme Court, I saw an artwork called 'Legacy' that brings together the past and the future, celebrating a century of women in law. Next to heroes like Cornelia Sorabji and Dame Rose Heilbron, there's also a picture of a law student just like any of us. Why? Because you don’t need to make history to make a difference. Every woman in law matters. For all the women studying or working in law, I know it's challenging sometimes. In a field where it can sometimes feel like you have to constantly prove yourself, especially against men. Remember: we belong here. This field can be tough. Some will doubt you just because you're a woman. Prove them wrong. You belong here. Your voice matters. Why do you think that representation is important? A: Not often enough, and especially so for women of color. It’s not just a problem in the appellate field. There are so many reasons why representation is important. Chief among them is how the disparity happened and became entrenched: if qualified individuals are dissuaded from or steered away from a career in any part because of who they are, we have to rectify that.
