Some in the public may not realize just how hard school board trustees work. Their service is a tireless devotion to continuous improvement. “As Superintendent, I believe education is the cornerstone of our community, an investment in our children's future and the bedrock of societal progress. In this endeavor, the role of our school board trustees is paramount. Their decisions shape the educational landscape, directly impacting our children, educators, and, by extension, every taxpayer, parent, and resident in our district both now and for future generations. But what empowers these trustees to make informed, effective decisions? The answer lies in their ongoing commitment to professional development.”… Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/g-wzbG_4

Teacher’s Day Tribute: Honoring the Unseen Efforts of Educators As students, we often overlook the immense hard work and dedication of our teachers. From early morning classes to late-night lesson preparations, teachers invest their time and energy to ensure each student receives the best guidance. They act as mentors, shaping young minds not only in academics but also in discipline and character. Most of the day is spent in school, and parents entrust teachers with the responsibility of moulding their children into responsible, well-behaved individuals. Teachers are the silent architects of our future, constantly striving to improve their students’ lives. Despite their tireless efforts, many teachers go unnoticed, and their impact is rarely acknowledged. In today's fast-paced world, students often lack patience and discipline, expecting quick results. It becomes a challenge for teachers to instil the right values when students are distracted by gadgets and social media. As a teacher, I feel deeply concerned that the essence of learning is shifting, and the mutual respect between teachers and students is fading. This disconnect needs urgent attention to ensure that education remains a transformative process. Many students fail to see teachers' efforts in grooming them, and some even resist this guidance. As a teacher, this can be disheartening, but our commitment to our students. Despite these efforts, a teacher’s work often goes unnoticed. Today’s students, in particular, seem to struggle with maintaining discipline, showing impatience, and paying attention to detail. The solution lies in rekindling the respect and value of teachers. Parents, students, and society must acknowledge the critical role teachers play in shaping the future. Educational institutions should foster stronger bonds between students and teachers, emphasizing mutual respect and understanding. #HappyTeachersDay, #RealHeroes #Salutetoeducators

Vice President of Policy at CASEL (Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning. Former Deputy Assistant Secretary. #46 Biden-Harris Alum. Former Congressional Staffer.
#BrownvBoard (1954) is one of the most consequential cases in the history of our country. It is the heartbeat of our multiracial democracy and integral to the field of public education. On this 70th anniversary, we see the promise of Brown moving further away. It’s incumbent on all of us to think about our responsibility to fulfilling the promise of Brown. At CASEL, we’re thinking about social and learning (SEL) as a key part of a comprehensive strategy on school integration. Schools do not just become spaces of inclusion without intentional policies and practices that create a sense of belonging and caring relationships. SEL and school integration are interconnected, and we must leverage all tools to help fulfill the promise of Brown. It is imperative for a healthy, multiracial democracy. As Justice Thurgood Marshall stated in 1974, “[f]or unless our children begin to learn together, there is little hope that our people will ever learn to live together and understand each other.” It was a deep honor to write this piece as the VP of Policy at CASEL and a former confessional staffer who led on school integration. Please see more here.

This is such a timely and important book for everyone who cares about public education and its role in protecting and preserving our democracy. Now, more than ever, it is imperative for everyone (not just those with formal leadership titles) to stand up and speak out. Berman and Luvelle elevate the reasons why and provide an important template for meaningful action that is respectful of diverse opinions by calling for dialogue over debate and being hard on the problems and soft on the people. Definitely a must read!
AASA Lead Superintendent for Social-Emotional Learning; Retired Superintendent of Schools: Hudson, MA; Jefferson County (Louisville), KY; Eugene, OR; & Andover, MA.
I am pleased to share that The Call to Courage: Standing Up and Speaking Out Against the Assaults on Democracy, Educators, and Students in America’s Schools was just released. Luvelle Brown and I wrote this book to support all educators and parents, but especially those whose schools are under threat for performing vital and meaningful work. We hope the book’s message will help you reclaim the narrative of public education and carry on the essential initiatives that support the success of all students.

One effective way to ensure success in the college application process is by having a well-rounded application strategy. This means applying to a mix of schools: those that are a stretch, those that are a good fit, and those where you are almost certain to be accepted.
