Rural crime is a constant threat to farmers and rural households. Equipment, machinery and animals are being targeted by professional groups of thieves. Rural crimes are usually not detected until well after the criminals are well away. The Victorian Farmers Federation Peninsula Branch would like to invite you to attend a practical online workshop on how to reduce the risk of rural crime. Learn from the Victoria Police how they are tackling rural crime and hear how they suggest you keep yourself and your property safe. Victoria Police will talk about crime data for the past 5 years broken down by locality - what's been stolen and where. Hear from the rural insurer WFI on what sort of crimes are being reported to them. Learn what steps an insurance company like to see in place and how that can affect your policy cost. See what technology provider ION Security uses to detect and deter rural intruders. Infrared cameras, invisible laser trip wires, automatic notification on your mobile and silent alarm systems. Using the latest technology to keep your farm safe. https://lnkd.in/g38sTTkX #ruralcrime #farmcrime #ruralprotection #victoriapolice #vicpolice

Security Alert for Farmers: Protect Your GPS Equipment NFU Mutual and the National Rural Crime Unit (NRCU) have issued a security alert due to an increase in thefts of GPS systems from farms in Lincolnshire, Essex, Newport, North Yorkshire, and Thames Valley. Organised criminals are targeting these high-value, portable pieces of equipment. Farmers are especially vulnerable during the busy harvest period, with repeat thefts causing significant financial and emotional distress. To safeguard your equipment, consider the following security measures: - Remove GPS units from tractors, combines, and machinery when not in use. - Store GPS units in a secure location and mark them with your farm name or postcode. - Activate PIN security, record serial numbers, and photograph your GPS equipment. - Enhance security with physical measures like CCTV and infra-red sensors. - Instruct staff to report unusual activity and be cautious when purchasing second-hand GPS equipment. Collaborative efforts from police forces aim to protect the farming industry. By staying vigilant and following these precautions, farmers can help prevent thefts and secure their valuable assets. Remember, community vigilance is key to combating organised criminal activities in rural areas. “The financial and mental strain is just horrendous.” Jon, farmer. The theft of vehicles, machinery, or livestock; poaching; harassment and abuse; damage to property: rural crime can have devastating impact on victims. One of the ways we support farmers is by conducting crime prevention visits. From the outside gate in, our officers will walk with owners around the farm premises and provide advice on ways to protect property and equipment. This could range from simple steps like inverting hinges on gates, to taking action such as registering trailers and equipment to aid recovery if stolen, or becoming part of a crime prevention community, like our Farm Watch or Horse Watch schemes. View our full video on YouTube channel to get a flavour of these visits https://lnkd.in/eig7jMGR If you’re interested in arranging a crime prevention visit, please visit our website https://lnkd.in/eUT6J_zh

🇨🇴 According to Colombian police data, cattle rustling cases fell by 71% between 2017 and 2023, from 5,135 head of cattle stolen to 1,484 during that span. The drop in theft appears to be due to the success of police operations against mainly local cattle rustling networks. Police actions have focused on preventing the crime through the use of new technology, as well as strengthening controls and investigative and intelligence work. However, there is severe underreporting of these crimes. 🖇️ Read the complete analysis here: https://bit.ly/3Lp6c1O

Founder & Managing Partner at CLM. Swirl Analyst at Mulberry Cottages & Director of a number of brilliant SMEs
Calling time on Countryside Crime.. The police define rural crime as ‘offences that relate to farms, agriculture, wildlife, the environment and heritage sites, where they are targeted due to their isolation or rural location’. With the latest figures showing that rural crime in the UK rose by 22.1% last year and cost an estimated £49.5m according to the NFU’s Rural Crime Report 2023 it is easy to see that how it is having a significant effect on famers & land owners financially & emotionally. As a result, police forces across the South-East (Kent, Surrey, Sussex, Thames Valley, Hampshire & Isle of Wight) have joined together to set up the South East Partnership Against Rural Crime (SEPARC) to ensure co-operation and a streamlined approach across the South-East making the countryside a safer place to live and work. Sussex Police Assistant Chief Constable Howard Hodges, the force lead for rural crime, said: “The main purpose of this partnership is to protect our rural communities and to make the region a hostile environment for criminals.” “We will continue to work together with our neighbouring forces to share information and intelligence, to ensure we can prevent, detect and respond to rural crime wherever possible. We will also engage with residents, businesses and visitors in our rural areas to offer crime prevention advice.” At CLM we work together with our land owners and farmers to advise against the main rural crimes of equipment theft, poaching, joy riding, dog attacks on livestock and more recently fuel theft. We believe a combined approach should be undertaken to deter criminals, including CCTV, electric gates and a robust security system as well as using recovery systems such as trackers and SmartWater. Rural Crime: Helping the farmers who feel vulnerable and isolated With few repercussions against criminals operating in rural areas, and the police not even attending scenes of rural crime, you can understand the frustration of the farmers. The farm industry likes to focus on security initiatives bla bla bla, without actually helping the farmers. I gave a presentation to the Wiltshire Rural Crime Forum and was told not to mention confrontation, why? Because we deal with confrontation totally different to the police advice of “locking yourself in the farm building and calling the police”, who may or may not even respond. FFS chaps, let’s give the farmers more support from understanding how criminals operate, to farm security measures, to actually dealing with confrontation and giving the farmers confidence. All these so called initiatives from the #nfu #cla #nrcu and the worse one the #nrcn don’t actually focus on helping the farmers themselves. Lots of initiatives about recovering stolen property but nothing to stop the property being stolen in the first place. Horse bolting and shutting the barn door mentality being played out by the farming industry. #fcn #nfu #ufu #nfumutual #cla #yfa #farminsurance #rcu #nrcu #nrcn #farmers #farming

Farm security is sometimes treated with a relaxed approach, but, simple measures can have a huge impact and add another layer of deterrent, particularly for putting off the opportunist criminal looking for a quick gain. Tip 👉 Consider a securer farm gate, if possible. Standard farm gates can be more susceptible to unauthorised entry. However, whatever sort of gate, if they are kept shut and locked at all times when not in authorised use, they will provide another layer of deterrent from criminals. 🔒 If you would like advice and tips on changes you can make to reduce the risk of theft on your farm, call us on 01536 607 070.
