I recently got to work with a team of dedicated and caring people. We were a fully remote team, and you would think that would prevent or at least create a barrier to strong relationships as time together was limited in meetings. However, it was the most connected group of people I have ever worked with, even more than when I was in the office.
Here are some things we did to create this environment where people got to know each other, care about each other, support each other in their work, and elevate their daily experience:
1. Water Cooler Chat: People were able to talk throughout the day about non-work-related things. Sometimes it was just small talk. Other times it was more organized with a topic or a poll. The team did this on their own, inspired by their desire to connect with each other.
2. Non-Work-Related Meeting: During a certain period of time, we created the opportunity to start the morning 30 minutes early to give people a chance to eat breakfast together and chat to start their day.
3. Movement: Several people on the team organized simple 'at your desk' movements that each person could easily do daily. This inspired others to share their experiences and motivate them to engage in simple exercises. It was a joy to watch those who participated find value in this and create greater connections with each other.
4. The Interview: From the very first contact with a potential employee, we shared that we are a dedicated and supportive team and that we expect anyone who comes aboard to also be interested in being part of a tight-knit, communicative group.
