As a hugely successful Farnborough International Airshow 2024 drew to a close with £81.5bn worth of deals, the focus on the fifth and final day is now firmly focused towards the next generation who will be shaping the future of the industry. Two years ago PAULEY were invited to attend #FIA2022 as public visitors to discuss a visionary new technology demonstrator programme with BAE Systems Air Training Team. Not having had an excuse to attended #FIA before, the scale and energy of the event was both overwhelming and awe-inspiring. #FIA2022 had returned after a 4 year haitus and introduced the Pioneers of Tomorrow initiative. No other single location in the world has contributed so much to the development of aeronautical science over such a long period of time as Farnborough. From the first airborne cameras and flying clothing, to high altitude space suits, night vision aids, head-up cockpit displays and the first carbon fibre experiments, the list of Farnborough’s aerospace innovators is endless. But sat atop a small roundabout outside Farnborough Airport sits a remarkably unassuming monument to the British aviation powerhouse, lifelong learner, pilot and engineer Sir Frank Whittle; a replica of the very first aircraft to fly with a jet engine, the Gloster E28/39. In modern procurement parlance, the “Gloster Pioneer” proved to be a perfect technology demonstration programme. When Whittle was born on 1 June 1907, the world airspeed record stood at 41.3 km/h. By the time of his death in 1996 the world airspeed record was 3,529.6 km/h This year we attended Farnborough as a BAE Systems Air technology partner in the true sense of the word. During that time, #ProjectOdySSEy, now part of the newly established #FalconWorks has evolved from an in-house proof of concept, to a minimal viable product demonstrator at #DSEI24, to a commercially available platform for BAE Systems global clientele. Furthermore FalconWorks has rolled out a parallel initiative, #ProjectCanDLE with a mission to enhance digital learning within the rapidly evolving world of #AI. All products being designed by FalconWorks, which has firmly established itself as world class research and development hub, include technologies such as uncrewed aircraft and elements of the UK’s future combat air systems, are being developed for the all domain training requirements of today and operational environment of tomorrow. The speed of progress has been astonishing, an achievement I’m sure the late great Sir Frank Whittle would be very proud of. Here's to the Pioneers of Today Lucy Walton Nick Smith Richard S. Milestones in Aviation History Celebrated on October 14 October 14 marks several significant milestones in the history of aviation, showcasing humanity's relentless pursuit of exploring the skies. One of the most notable events is the achievement of Chuck Yeager, who on October 14, 1947, became the first human to break the sound barrier. Flying the experimental Bell X-1 aircraft, Yeager soared to an unprecedented speed of Mach 1.06, a feat that forever changed the landscape of aeronautical engineering and military aviation. Another significant milestone celebrated on this day is the founding of the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) in 1905. Established to oversee and record world aeronautical and astronautical records, the FAI has been pivotal in fostering international cooperation and promoting safety and innovation in air sports and aviation. October 14 also marks the anniversary of the first live telecast of a United States presidential candidate from an aircraft. In 1952, Dwight D. Eisenhower made a historic broadcast from a plane, utilizing aviation technology to reach voters across the nation and set a precedent for future political campaigns. These milestones not only highlight technological advancements but also underscore the profound impact of aviation on global connectivity, military strategy, and even political communication. As these anniversaries are commemorated, they serve as a reminder of the courage, innovation, and vision that have driven aviation history forward. #milestonesinaviationhistory #aviationhistory #ChuckYeager #SoundBarrierBreakthrough #FAIFounding #InternationalAviation #EisenhowerAviationBroadcast #AviationInnovation

Late in 1901, Wilbur Wright, the famed American pilot, addressed a group of engineers on the subject of “Some Aeronautical Experiments” that he had conducted with his brother, Orville, during the previous two years. “The difficulties… are of three general classes: Those which relate to the construction of the wings. Those which relate to the power required to drive the machine through the air. Those which relate to the balancing and steering of the machine in-flight.” Those challenges were overcome; aviation licensing is easy by comparison. Let’s take to the skies together!
