New York-area airports are undergoing significant transformations, elevating them from some of the worst-rated terminals globally to cutting-edge travel hubs. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is spearheading these efforts, aiming to create world-class facilities. Rick Cotton, the executive director of the Port Authority, emphasized their goal to turn these airports into some of the best globally.
LaGuardia Airport was the first to see major improvements. After enduring years of construction and traffic congestion, the $8 billion renovation completed in 2022 has garnered praise. The new Terminal B, filled with natural light, public art, and modern amenities, was named the best new airport terminal in the world by Skytrax in 2023. Enhanced technology and expanded security screening areas have significantly reduced wait times and delays, both in the terminal and on the tarmac.
John F. Kennedy International Airport is in the midst of its $19 billion overhaul. Key elements of this project include the construction of two new terminals. The 2.4 million-square-foot Terminal 1 will open in phases, with an arrivals and departures hall and 14 gates expected by 2026, and an additional nine gates by 2030. Terminal 6, at 1.2 million square feet, will also be completed in two phases, with the first five gates ready by 2026 and the remaining five by 2028. These upgrades promise streamlined roadways, airy architecture, improved retail and dining options, and enhanced TSA security.
Newark Liberty International Airport is also receiving significant upgrades. Following the award-winning $2.7 billion renovation of Terminal A, plans are underway to update Terminal B. Additionally, a $2.2 billion replacement of the airport’s AirTrain is set for completion by 2030. These renovations reflect the Port Authority's commitment to providing a top-tier customer experience, with LaGuardia and Newark's new terminals being the only ones in North America to earn 5-star Skytrax ratings.
However, while the terminals have been significantly improved, public transportation to these airports remains a concern. Efforts to build an AirTrain to LaGuardia were halted due to escalating costs, and the existing AirTrain to JFK requires cumbersome transfers from subways or rail systems. Andrew Rein, president of the Citizens Budget Commission, acknowledged the critical upgrades but highlighted the persistent challenges in accessing these airports efficiently.
