Canada 🇨🇦 is yet to join the ranks of countries around the world that provide children with school lunches. One of these countries, Sweden 🇸🇪, even offers these hot school lunches free of charge to all students aged 6 to 16, and to most students aged 16 to 19, five days a week. "It's important to highlight that this policy (in Sweden) was not implemented due to children going hungry. In fact, practically everyone had access to food, as Sweden was then one of the top five wealthiest nations in the world. Such an important intervention that EVERY Councils should implement - unlocking £millions for both low-income households missing out on support and cash-strapped schools. There are some examples of this being done - Lambeth Council being one where by auto enrolling just 340 children - it secured £462,000 per year for these families and £821,000 of additional income per year for the schools https://lnkd.in/e3AmkuF5

CREATE is pleased to see the Victorian Budget 2024/25 prioritises children and families with $374 million allocated to protecting children and supporting their families. The $198 million commitment to delivering more early intervention services to help keep families together is critical to interrupting prolonged cycles of contact with the out-of-home care system. This will help to ensure the capacity of the system to intervene early and deliver adequate intensive family supports to avoid escalation of risk. We also see the timely provision of $38 million to support carers providing home-based care for children and young people as a welcome relief measure in the midst of the rising cost of living. This move should help to ensure that carers can continue to support the children in their care. While CREATE acknowledges the $6.8 million to support the extension of the Yoorrook Justice Commission as the formal truth-telling process with Aboriginal peoples in Victoria and the Government’s engagement with the process, we reiterate calls to implement in full recommendations from Yoorrook for Justice. This would demonstrate a genuine commitment to true partnership by transferring decision-making power, authority, control and resources to First Peoples, to advance self-determination across the Victorian child protection system. #VicBudget #CREATEfnd
