🧐 **Did You Know?** 🧐 In 2023, the cremation rate in the United States reached an estimated 60.6%. Just over six decades ago, the cremation rate was less than 4%! This significant shift reflects changing societal attitudes towards end-of-life choices, cost considerations, and environmental impacts. As we move forward, it's important to understand and respect these evolving preferences in our communities. What are your thoughts on this trend? How do you think it will shape the future of memorial services? As someone working in the park and recreation field, you may feel like more experienced industry professionals often drown out your voice. However, it’s important for young professionals to share their insights and ideas because they bring fresh perspectives and innovative approaches to the industry. Moreover, statistics show that the number of young professionals in parks and recreation is increasing, with a growing number of individuals under the age of 35 joining the field. Read the full blog from Colton Patak, co-chair of publications for our Young Professional Network, to see how you can get your voice and idea out there: https://bit.ly/4cmbtDD #PowerOfParks #WhereYouBelong #NRPAYPN #NRPAMembership #ParksAndRec #YoungProfessional #OpenSpaceBlog

Ecological Research and Design | Gen Z Climate and Wildlife Activist | Writer and Poet | Coordinator of YES! At The Philosophy Family Farm—storytelling and inclusive environmental action
I am excited to post here again, as I have been working for the last few months on a new project with the farm that I am thrilled to announce. I recently created an environmental advocacy/storytelling group called YES! (Your Environmental Story) at The Philosophy Family Farm, which is a forum for people of all backgrounds to share their experiences and stories with the environment, from their work/studies or just everyday interactions. My goal for the group is to break down the barriers that people face with talking about environmental conservation/advocacy, so that everyone's voice can be heard and more people can become involved with the environmental movement by recognizing that everyone's experiences matter in conservation efforts. The group currently is on GroupMe, and the community is being engaged with fun challenges, games, and questions that encourage sharing, dialogue, and skill-building. Eventually, as the group grows, I am planning on hosting Zoom calls where participants can tell their stories and share ideas with a different theme and community-building goal each time. I am elated to build this community, and I would love for you to join! Here is the link to the GroupMe group: You're invited to my new group 'YES! At The Philosophy Family Farm' on GroupMe. Click here to join: https://lnkd.in/e_AF-zmn For this week, people are introducing themselves with their work/studies, something they appreciate about the environment, and a fun "two truths and a lie" about themselves :) I look forward to seeing y'all as this community builds, and I cannot wait to see it grow as a space of positivity, inspiration, and people contributing to a better world! #community #conservation #storytelling #youth #genz #sustainability #wildlife #environmentalmovement #climatechange #changemaking

Overall funding for Indigenous Peoples and local communities’ tenure and forest guardianship has increased by 36% since 2020, with 72% of the increase driven by the IPLC Forest Tenure Pledge. IP- and LC-led funding mechanisms can ensure that more of this funding is channeled to communities’ own local organizations! The Rights and Resources Initiative’s IP- and LC-led funding mechanism, the Community Land Rights and Conservation Finance Initiative (CLARIFI), represents the next generation of an Indigenous-led global movement to secure rights and safeguard nature. By supporting the self-determined priorities of local peoples, CLARIFI ensures that they have agency in shaping their own future. #ThePledgeWeWant Learn more here → clarifirights.org

Public engagement discuss…. I’m asking the question here of the engaged professionals on LinkedIn. Having heard from tree officers and arboriculturists about the thousands of enquires that they get from the public wanting trees removed because of perceived threats or experienced nuisance; Having tried to facilitate consultation processes around trees where the parties had no desire to allow space in their own minds to comprehend one another’s drivers, needs or perceptions; Having met with members of the public, protesting about a felled tree who said to me “I want to make the tree consultant feel the pain that I feel”; But also having been involved with and seen brilliantly successful tree schemes that have engaged the public and delivered for everyone; I photographed this tree today with a paradigm in my head of what story it would tell. However, it turns out that it tells a slightly different story than is implied by my preceding list. But I’ll share that later, for now I am interested in people’s thoughts… #trees #treeplanting #publicengagement #protest #council #streets #streettrees #arboriculture #vandalism #treeofficer #iliketreesbut

https://lnkd.in/emV4tcj8 It's a stark reality that we often take without regard for the consequences, yet when it comes to giving back, only a few genuinely step up to the plate. This imbalance highlights a critical issue in our society, where the importance of giving back is overshadowed by self-interest. It's imperative that we shift this mindset and encourage more individuals and organizations to contribute to the betterment of our communities and the planet as a whole. True progress lies in our collective willingness to give back and make a positive impact on the world around us.

"You see, shame used to be a mangrove (in nature). It used to be that if you were a candidate for president of the United States and it was alleged — with a lot of evidence — that you falsified business records to cover up sex with a porn star right after your wife had given birth to a child, you would lower your head in shame, drop out of the race and hide under the bed. That shame mangrove has been completely uprooted by Trump. The reason people felt ashamed is that they felt fidelity to certain norms — so their cheeks would turn red when they knew they had fallen short, explained Dov Seidman, the author of the book “How: Why HOW We Do Anything Means Everything” and founder of the How Institute for Society and LRN. “But in the kind of normless world we have entered where societal, institutional and leadership norms are being eroded,” Seidman said to me, “no one has to feel shame anymore because no norm has been violated.” More than ever, we are living in the “never-ending storm” that Seidman described to me back in 2016, in which moral distinctions, context and perspective — all the things that enable people and politicians to make good judgments — get blown away. Blown away — that is exactly what happens to the plants, animals and people in an ecosystem that loses its mangroves."
