2024 is 50th anniversary of Malaysia- China Diplomatic Relations.
Premier Li Qiang had just visited Malaysia and witnessed a number of MOU signed relating to trade, skills, technology exchange and many more.
Malaysia is definitely tapping on this "years of bonding" to drive our economy to the next level. Opportunities are definitely there not to mention Malaysia is going to be chairman of ASEAN in year 2025 where we have well positioned ourselves as the launch pad to the ASEAN market for the world.
YET, HOW READY ARE WE in terms of talent, infrastructure, programme, government machinery, maturity of smes to tap on this opportunities.
Malaysia is not short of great economic policies, incentives and programmes supporting our industry. What is lacking to maximise our potential tapping the opportunities in front of us?
1) LEARN HOW CHINA USE TECHNOLOGY OVER TRANSFER OF TECHNOLOGY FROM CHINA
- In my recent visits to more than 20 over factories, we met many talents from operators to engineers. Instead of learning new technology, they are actively involved in improvising their work processes to achieve better result as well as their work easier, faster, enjoying and PROUD of their achievement. Such model promotes continuous innovation instead of just adopting technology.
- Malaysia too hv local companies who equally has the capabilities to develop technology. Yet, many has not make their mark due to unable to make it practical, cost effective, easier enough to be deployed to actual business environment.
2) EXPERIENCE MALAYSIA OVER SHOWCASING MALAYSIA -Tourism
- VISA FREE policy certainly is a great move.
- Why Chinese Love to Visit Malaysia? I strongly believe culture diversity is the main reason supported by ease of communication.
- Tourist don't just come to visit and take photos at scenic places or unique architecture. Very often they are curious on our families and communities practice our norms. They can get that too in other countries in the world but there is no place like Malaysia which could offer them better understanding through Chinese language.
- Singing a song with English, Chinese, malay, Indian and other native races allow them to experience our race harmony.
- preparing food & handicraft made by malay kampung & Chinese New villages allows them to experience authenticity of local delights.
- cultural workshops etc will all be great but with chinese speaking personnel will make them feel welcome
3) COLLABORATION WITH CHINESE COMMUNITIES GROUP.
- Malaysia has many Chinese Trade & Business Associations. Yet many might hv neglected Chinese Clan Associations at state or national level. Fujian, GuangDong, Hainan, ChowZhou etc
- Many members or leaders of these community associations are successful entrepreneurs & business icons.
- There are unique strong bonding with China counterparts.
- Govt shld hv greater engagement & collaboration to tap on this channel.
At the recent 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐚-𝐒𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐁𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐮𝐦 2024 held in Singapore at the Hilton Singapore Orchard with the theme - “𝘉𝘦𝘺𝘰𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘉𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘰𝘵: 𝘚𝘩𝘢𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘍𝘶𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘉𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴 & 𝘐𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘪𝘯 𝘐𝘯𝘥𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘢”, it was shared that our bilateral economic ties have remained steadfast & resilient over the years, despite headwinds in the global economy.
Despite the close & warm ties overall, discord could still flare up to mar Indonesia-Singapore relations in the future given the persistence of undercurrents in ties, domestic perceptions of one another & new dynamics in our common strategic environment. Nevertheless, going forward, both Indonesia & Singapore should not let discord & tension define our relations.
We need to continue building new initiatives while cultivating existing channels of communication to enhance mutual understanding.
💡 𝐅𝐮𝐧 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐬:
🔈 In 2023, 𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐞 amounted to S$69 billion, making Indonesia Singapore’s 6th largest trading partner & one of our largest trading partners in ASEAN;
🔉 Singapore has also consistently been Indonesia’s top source of 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐃𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐈𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 (𝘍𝘋𝘐) since 2014, recording US$15.4 billion of FDI in 2023;
🔊 We are also amongst each other’s top source of 𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐬 whereby in 2023, Singapore welcomed 2.3 million tourists from Indonesia, while Indonesia recorded 1.4 million visitors from Singapore; &
📢 In September 2023, the Energy Market Authority (EMA) granted Conditional Approvals for the import of two gigawatts of 𝐥𝐨𝐰-𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐧 𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐲 from Indonesia to Singapore, from projects developed by companies from both countries & these projects will involve the installation of the largest solar & battery manufacturing plants in Indonesia.
How Indonesia-Singapore relations will develop in the next 50 years will be determined chiefly by the domestic politics of both countries; the changes in the Southeast Asian region; as well as the progress of ASEAN Community, which will involve our economic relations with the rest of ASEAN.
Notwithstanding our contrasting sizes, populations, resources & economies, Indonesia & Singapore share a common geopolitical destiny & a shared geostrategic future; we are both at the crossroads of the Indo-Pacific region astride the fulcrum of Southeast Asia.
To that my friend - Pak Ferry Akbar Pasaribu, it was an awesome catch up! 💪 Thank you for the wonderful fellowship & camaraderie for years to come! 🤝
I look forward to the potential for us to explore new ideas, partnerships & further cooperation, especially in new growth areas.
Till we next meet Pak Ferry Akbar Pasaribu, wishing you & your family in staying healthy & safe!

Regional integration, not fragmentation, will deliver a better tomorrow for Central Asia – that’s the position of President Mirziyoyev, articulated at the Astana Leaders’ Summit this week.
During the Summit, it was highlighted how enhancing intra-regional trade and economic integration is essential for addressing how the region can grow with economic diversification, sustainable development, and geopolitical stability.
The vision includes bolstering trade leveraging collective resources, and improving connectivity between countries. The emphasis on regional integration reflects a broader understanding that cooperation will be the key to unlocking Central Asia's full potential on the global stage.
From mutual recognition of national ID cards to the development of joint tourism products under the "One Visa – Entire Region" principle to encourage tourism exchange, Uzbekistan is leading Central Asia’s efforts to find strength in unity!

As the 2024 ASEAN-Australia special summit commences today to commemorate 50 years of partnership, I find myself reflecting on my recent experience supporting the Australian Consulate-General in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
My sincere thanks to Ms. Sarah Hooper and the entire team for providing me with the invaluable opportunity to not only gain insights but also actively contribute to Australia's diplomatic efforts in the region.
As a bloc, ASEAN is Australia’s second largest trading partner and with more than one million Aussies with a Southeast Asian heritage, our cultural, economic and strategic ties run deep, formed on mutual respect, transparency and people-to-people connections. As highlighted by the “Invested: Australia’s Southeast Asia Economic Strategy to 2040” report by Special Envoy Mr Nicholas Moore AO, the potential for this cooperation with ASEAN is yet to be fully realised. This summit therefore is a timely and critical platform for us to come together and set the foundation for an even stronger and more prosperous partnership for the future.
Experiencing extreme FOMO for not being there in Melbourne to join in on the activities. However, I am optimistic about what this week will mean for the next 50 years of the ASEAN-Australia relationship!

Japanese presence in Malaysia (and across Southeast Asia) is inescapable. When I walk down Jalan Bukit Bintang, one of the busiest streets in KL, I am instantly surrounded by Japanese retail brands, snacks, restaurants and dedicated Tokyo Streets. Even a small neighbourhood mall in the suburbs would not be considered complete without a Japanese restaurant. Such is the extent of their soft power, but we can't say that the other way around. Whenever I'm in Tokyo I might see glimpses of American brands, Italian restaurants or French delicatessens, but the presence of Southeast Asia is hardly noticeable.
This is what I meant when I said that ASEAN-Japan relations resemble a one-way street. There is no denying the importance or sincerity of relations, but it's high time that Southeast Asia appeals to Japan as more than just as a holiday destination.
My latest commentary on the East Asia Forum, co-written by Maria Monica Wihardja, is a follow up of our #NikkeiForum panel where we spoke about the people-to-people exchanges in ASEAN-Japan relations.
