When it comes to hiring a fractional or full time CFO there are two things you should expect: 1) Operational Excellence: The 4 components of the finance department (taxes, capital markets, accounting and FO&A) should run smoothly. This entails having the right people, processes and technology to ensure that the finances are properly managed 2) Decision Making Insights; The other crucial component of the CFO is to ensure that the CEO has the right information as it relates to catch, profit margin and year over year revenue growth

What is a financial controller & why should you hire one? 🤔 In a SMB where a CFO is not yet present, a controller is the leader of the accounting & finance 🤑 functions of a business…and a critical hire. 💡When added to your team, a controller will help you shoulder much of the burden of financing a business. And allow you to focus on the other aspects of the business (e.g. operations and business development). A good controller will: 👉 Ensure all business transactions are recorded accurately with good internal controls 👉 Provide financial statements in a timely manner 👉 Develop a budget 👉 Manage cash flow (working capital, cash balances, etc.) 👉 Supply internal & external business partners with information as requested A GREAT controller will these AND: ✅ Have 5+ years industry experience ✅ Effectively manage/ develop teams ✅ Close the books <5 days ✅ Produce accurate forecasting ✅ Clearly communicate ideas ✅ Act as a business partner For many business owners, handing off this much responsibility to an employee can be a step filled with anxiety and fear. 😧 But it doesn’t need to be. 😀 The key is to get crystal clear on what you are looking for and tap your resources for help. At Outlook CFO we assess and actively prepare our clients for when the timing is right to hire a controller. 🎯 I would love to be a resource to you and others you know that need help with this. #fractionalcfo #financialcontroller #rapidgrowth

Do you know the difference between a Controller and a CFO? Here's what you need to know before hiring for your financial team 👇 Role of a Controller They're at the forefront of overseeing accounting, managing payroll, and ensuring accurate financial reporting. The CFO's Role They lead the way in financial forecasting and strategic advice, crucial for guiding a company's financial decisions and shaping growth strategies. Hire a CFO if you need: • Crafting strategic financial plans. • Providing expert investment advice. • Spearheading business growth strategies. • Making pivotal high-level financial decisions. Hire a Controller if you need: • Managing compliance. • Desire stronger processes. • Accurate financial reporting. • Overseeing accounting staff. Truth is, most businesses benefit from both roles. The best part is that outsourcing is currently the best solution for many SMBs. This approach has been popular since 2020, and it's here to stay. Fractional services from finance firms open the door for SMBs to a complete finance team. It's an adaptable, cost-effective approach to having a robust financial backbone. One thing I've learned from speaking with finance leaders is that you can have exceptional technical ability for FP&A, but if you can't develop, long-lasting and strategic relationships, you will fall behind. Having an exceptional business partner means: 1. Cross-function collaboration - Inter-departmental meetings with a purpose 2. Joint planning sessions - Supporting department heads with accurate forecasts 3. Integrated business planning - Aligned business strategy If you need a strategic advisor to take your finance function to the next level, hire a finance business partner. On this topic, I'm working with a Private Equity-backed SaaS business that is looking for a #2 to the CFO to take the lead on strategic initiatives. Alternatively, send me a message if you're thinking of hiring for your finance team. #FPandA #BusinessPartner #Growth

I Partner With CEOs & CFOs To Deploy Top-Tier Interim Accounting and Finance Consultants Who Boost Profitability Via The Pinnacle Difference
Many people outside of accounting & finance think a Controller is just a Mini-CFO but that couldn't be further from the truth. The best way I can explain the difference is this... A Controller's primary focus is on the past and the immediate future. They're focused on preparing timely and accurate financials statements for senior leadership to make reliable decisions on. They're preparing these financials according to GAAP (typically) because this will give the most accurate representations of a company's financial health. CFOs primarily focus on the future (1-5 years out). They're taking those financial statements and applying assumptions to project future needs and performance of the business. They work with the CEO/president to take their vision of the business and turn it into a financial picture. They ask questions like... Do we have enough cash to fund operations? Should we make this acquisition? Are we going to hit our growth goals? Will it cost as much as we think it will to hit those growth goals? Can we afford to hire? How should we raise capital? CFOs are living in the future to project any obstacles or opportunities and then make decisions in the present to react accordingly. What are the other differences you might add between a Controller and a CFO? #accountingandfinance #controller #chieffinancialofficer #hiring

Which archetype of CFO is best for your asset? This is a major point of emphasis for us when we are getting aligned with clients on any search. Generally speaking, we can segment into these four buckets when looking at lower middle-market CFOs: 1. Accounting track CFO (early career audit -> mid-career accounting roles -> controller -> CFO) 2. FP&A track CFO (financial analyst -> FP&A focused roles -> VP Finance -> CFO) 3. Investment Banking / Corp Dev track CFO (early career IB OR blue-chip consulting -> corp dev, strategy, transaction services -> FP&A leader -> CFO) 4. Various mixes of the above. Our experience has been that it depends on a number of factors, three of the biggest being: - Stage in which the company is in - Investment thesis over the next 4-6 years - Willingness to invest in team building to counterbalance the skillset of the CFO. This discussion is critical in the attempt to "get it right". Some candidates have a set of skills that will be great for a business in need of first-time professionalization and infrastructure to support future growth, while others might need to rely heavily on a team or key direct report to "build" while they strategically influence the platform alongside the CEO. In this instance, there can be a right and wrong, and it's imperative that we take the time to brainstorm the tradeoffs between each background as it pertains to the situation. Although, I am sure some of you will tell me that you can do it all… :)
