How much does a gameplay trailer cost? At this year's GDC, Thomas Reisenegger provided this snapshot of where rates are currently. These numbers are based on surveying colleagues in the industry (myself included).
In AAA games the rates can still go much higher than the top end cited here, but this talk was mostly targeted to indie developers.
What to label each of these price ranges is tricky because "simple" and "fancy" do not necessarily imply quality. A lot of trailers I make I'd describe as simple.
My first instinct is to label the ranges with something reflective of the experience level of the editor/producer (less experienced editor, medium experienced, professional, etc.) But even THEN it's not necessarily accurate because there are some amazing editors out there who are undercharging!
And of course there are editors with all sorts of different living expenses based on where they live which could allow them to charge less than these ranges. So it's always up to the individual what they want to charge. I'd advise people to at least consider where the client is based when determining their price, because that will somewhat determine the rough price range they have in mind.
Either way, if you're a developer or an editor you should find these useful! As Thomas caveated at the beginning of his talk: The moment the talk was given the rates became out of date because of course people are always adjusting.
If you're a game trailer editor who needs help with your own pricing you can message me here and I'll be happy to help, especially if you're just getting started!
