Interesting propaganda piece on civil—military fusion in People’s Daily: ➡️ The official party mouthpiece tells the story of Professor Bai Xiaoying who in 2019 swapped her position as Assistant Professor in Computer Science at Tsinghua University for a civilian post in the People Liberation Army (PLA). ➡️ According to her university webpage, Bai received a BA from Northwestern Polytechnical University, Xi'an, in 1995; a Master of Computer Science from Beihang University, Beijing, China in 1998 and a Ph.D. in Computer Science, Arizona State University, USA, 2001. Despite Beihang U being known to have close ties with the PLA she was working on a “DoD project” (presumably the U.S. Department of Defense) for her PhD. ➡️ Upon completion of her PhD she returned to China and joined Tsinghua University in 2002. Asked why she chose to switch to the PLA in 2019, she points out: “In the past, wars were fought with guns and steel. Now it's all about information and data. To win an information war, we must first win the data advantage. This sense of mission and honor to serve our country can’t be bought with a high salary.” ➡️ The article does not reveal what exactly she is working on. But it lauds Bai for bringing in a number of younger “talents” from the sciences. Her comment: “Young research talent is the future of our military research. As a division commander, I feel it's my duty to help them grow and provide fresh troops for our military research.” ➡️ This personal story comes with numerous pictures, including one foto of Professor Bai holding a small firearm apparently about to shoot. In all pictures she is shown wearing uniform. ➡️ She is commended for saying: “Our generation has experienced the reform and opening up and our country's rapid development. I've experienced such a radical change. It can be said that science and technology to strengthen the country, science and technology to strengthen the army are to some extent our generation’s beliefs that run deep in our bones!” ⬆️ While the “civil—military fusion” policy is not explicitly mentioned, I think this piece exemplifies it well. Its main message is that even a professor’s position at one of the leading academic institutions in the country is less glorious than working for the further strengthening of China’s military power. ⬆️ Against the backdrop of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, the claim that only “past wars were fought with guns and steel” is highly debatable.
