Can you watch YouTube and figure out how to implement ERP? Back in 2005 I was hired to do my first ERP implementation project. Start with a system selection. And then act as a BA/PM/QA/Support Analyst to make this whole thing work. Was I ready for this role? Hell no. No coaching, no mentorship. I googled what ERP was and how to implement it. Mostly figured things out. The vendor made sweet promises on RFP bid but turned out to be a total liar. According to a contract there was a schedule that we were supposed to pay and they were obligated to deliver per project plan. We did our part. And they totally failed theirs. The vendor made the client pay above the budget. Just because they could. We were already ‘in bed’ with them. And the legal support was not available. Wait. That was not the end of our tortures. We had two failed attempts to go live because of a system readiness (functions, data migration). But we finally made it, and the client was happy. These were my first ERP lessons that I learnt: Honest lesson #1. I was not a good match for this job. Better hire an experienced system selection consultant and internal ERP team. Saving on this can be very expensive. Harsh lesson #2. Never pay an SI by the schedule. Only pay when milestones done. Lesson #3. Always have a specialist proofread and validate the paperwork. Preferably someone who knows a deal in ERP implementation agreements and SOW . Lesson #4. It’s OK to no go. Just learn from the mistakes and plan to do better next time. There were probably 100 more lessons that I learnt in those 2 years… The moral of the story: “Hire an ERP adviser.” Yeah, but I already have an ERP analyst in house. #ERP #TheERPGuy #ERPImplementation
