There's a really exciting transformation brewing in our industry! For years, we've been aware of the shortage of engineering skills and the challenge of making the field more appealing. But over the last decade or so, I've witnessed remarkable initiatives by Catapults and companies that are revitalising the industry, especially in the UK and Ireland. These initiatives are now giving us a rich harvest. At the recent MACH show, I was blown away by the enthusiasm of visitors to our stand, many of them in their twenties, some younger, and representing a diverse range of disciplines. Last week, during a customer visit, I was amazed to find a shopfloor manned by only young engineers, none of them above their twenties, with an incredibly talented 18-year-old operating one of our machines. And yesterday, at a potential customer's site, I encountered a team of young professionals, except for a 36-year-old 😉 focusing on the future of the business, but differently, refreshingly different. These young minds are reshaping the industry with their fresh perspectives. They are no longer content with traditional approaches; instead, they seek new manufacturing solutions, technical innovations, software, data acquisition, and new purchasing strategies. They aren't bound by traditional rigid budget models but are driven to find the best solutions for their businesses today while keeping an eye on the future, building their business cases accordingly. We are in the midst of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, and the UK and Ireland are poised to lead the way (Again). The energy and vision of these young professionals are truly inspiring, and I'm excited to see how they will shape the future of engineering. Let's add fuel to this transformation and support the next generation of innovators who will propel our industry forward! I am incredibly optimistic for what will come next. In high school, my mom made me take a science course to broaden my career options. I didn't want to take the science course because most of my friends took the arts course, and I wanted to be with them. In college, where I studied chemical engineering, I never felt I was good at solving problems in science because there were so many talented professors and classmates. I decided to go into investment banking because I didn't think I could stand out as an engineer. My experience in investment banking taught me many things, including corporate finance, stock markets, M&A, and professional skills like a growth mindset and attention to detail. Maximizing enterprise value became one of my crucial agenda. After five years at IBD, I got an MBA at Tepper and joined McKinsey. My experience with business issues made me interested in solving them as someone who operates business. Now I'm starting a new role as CFO at 3DC, a startup that makes cutting-edge carbon composites called Graphene MesoSponge (GMS). GMS is known for its unique features and broad use cases. We currently aim to sell it as conductive additives for batteries. Many top battery makers are already testing it. Also, we aim to provide technology to improve the manufacturing process, especially for the electrode. We want to connect investors in batteries and sustainable/clean/green areas. We also want to connect business partners like OEMs and battery makers. Please let me know if you want to work with us. We are thrilled to announce that Ryoichi Moriya joined #3DC as #CFO from McKinsey & Company! Ryo has a unique background that fits 3DC's culture. He holds a master's degree in chemical engineering from Kyoto University, where he was a classmate of CEO Takuma Kuroda. He had studied carbon composites where CSO Hirotomo Nishihara studied when he was a doctoral student. We believe that Ryo has astrong affinity with 3DC and its management members and he would contribute to the Company's long-term growth.
