In its eight years, UTRGV has become a university that is not just accessible and affordable, but one that offers high-quality education. Washington Monthly rankings singled out UTRGV in several other areas: 1st in Texas, 2nd in the country among public schools for performance of Pell Grant students. 1st in Texas, 4th in the nation among public schools for net price of attendance. 1st in Texas, 9th in the nation among public schools for social mobility. Also, this fall, DegreeChoices.com ranked UTRGV No. 1 among large Texas public universities for best relative economic value, and No. 15 overall nationally — one spot ahead of Vanderbilt. And when it comes to this year’s U.S. News rankings, UTRGV improved an unprecedented 72 positions nationally, ranking sixth among Texas public schools – the university’s highest-ever ranking. KNOWLEDGE INCREASES📚 LOC: 175 million (see below) UCF: 1.8 million (see comment) LOC is ~100X larger than my UCF library and at rate of 10,000 items per day may reasonable be projected to close such gap in ~500 days (less than a couple years). QUESTION: How do I personally/professionally catch up and keep up with the tsunami of publications, productions, etc. with only 24 hours in a day, no self driving car, no chauffeurr, no teleportation, unable to wean myself of sleep😴, etc. This question is aimed at those claiming nothing is impossible. And where there’s a will there’s a way. I hereby continue to challenge such claims. [without characterizing them with any adjectives🙂 not adopting any ad hominem stance.] Just a factual question. How do ai tame this torrent? Thomas L. Friedman basically says it’s long exceeded human ability. I accept that assessment. But I like the idea that I can do anything and continuing a futile pursuit in hope someone can prove us wrong with some magic, technique, technology. 24 hours x 60 minutes x 60 seconds ——————————————————- 10,000 books per day = avg 8.64 seconds per book. This may be how fast Congress can pass legislation (eg release $1.7 trillion bill on 4.417 pages at 02:00 Thursday morning to be voted on my Friday afternoon [I may be rounding some figures but that’s approximately what was reported IIRC]) but I takes me longer than that just to flip thru the pages, physically or electronically. Does Ray Kurzweil have a solution? Factchecking dtance calculations in comments substantially disagree with CBS. https://lnkd.in/enhPYk3c #UCF #LOC #libraryofcongress ##

This is a great summary. For a good few years in an impact role, I was worried I hadn't come to my own settled view on how evaluation should be done. But I have gradually come to same view as this last point: "Methods are only as good or bad as their appropriateness for answering particular questions and in relation to how well they are able to understand the primary phenomena under study."
I came up with a top 10 of what's wrong with RCTs (and experiments in general). It's really a note-to-self for the next time I hear the words "gold standard" or "evidence hierarchy." I'll follow this up with a discussion of some recent randomista pivots. #evaluation #learning #rct cc. Thomas Delahais Andi Fugard Alan Hudson Jonathan Said Niki Wood https://lnkd.in/eQ3J49ZW

Paper accepted in ACM SIGIR 2024 (https://lnkd.in/gT92KiU8) Heartiest congratulations for the acceptance of the following work in ACM SIGIR 2024. The title, list of authors and abstract of the work are as follows: Title: Instruction-Guided Bullet Point Summarization of Long Financial Earnings Call Transcripts Authors: Subhendu Khatuya, Koushiki Sinha, Niloy Ganguly, Saptarshi Ghosh and Pawan Goyal Abstract: While automatic summarization techniques have made significant advancements, their primary focus has been on summarizing short news articles or documents that have clear structural patterns like scientific articles or government reports. Unfortunately, there has not been much exploration into developing efficient methods for summarizing financial documents, which often contain complex facts and figures. Here, we study the problem of bullet point summarization of long Earning Call Transcripts (ECTs) using the recently released ECTSum dataset. We leverage an unsupervised question-based extractive module followed by a parameter efficient instruction-tuned abstractive module to solve this task. Our proposed model FLAN-FinBPS achieves new state-of-the-art performances outperforming the strongest baseline.

Excited to announce that I will be presenting an adjusted version of my previous stroke project work at the upcoming Society for Benefit-Cost Analysis Conference. Through the GRACE (Generalized Risk-Adjusted Cost-Effectiveness) Framework, I will showcase how risk-preference adjustments play a critical role in the model adaptation. My presentation will mainly focus on "How are we applying the framework" over generalized stroke improvements with either a procedural/operational or device change. Additionally, I will also demonstrate some validation techniques to justify the model application as the "Why can we apply the framework." Looking forward to sharing my experience coping with the benefit-cost analyses over complex technological improvements. Stay tuned for more updates! #GRACEFramework #SocietyforBenefitCostAnalysis #StrokeImprovements #ValidationTechniques
