While the broader M&A market may have hit its trough in Q3 2023, the private equity buyout market's recovery has been delayed. Last year marked the first decline in PE's share of both M&A deal count and deal value after 8 years of gains. This trend persisted into 2024, with the share of value dropping to 33% in Q1 from 40% in 2023, signaling a pivotal shift in the market dynamics. 2️⃣ Exits logjam update: Exits are crucial for sustaining PE recovery, and recent trends suggest a flattening of the downtrend. The remarkable $18.3 billion sale of SRS Distribution to Home Depot by Leonard Green & Partners is a testament to this, reigniting hopes for more substantial exits. As corporate buyers regain confidence, we anticipate a resurgence in exit activity. 3️⃣ Continuation funds surge: The rise of continuation funds is reshaping the PE landscape. With $78.3 billion closed in secondaries funds in 2023, liquidity provision to buyout funds is on the rise. Q1 witnessed a doubling of continuation fund exits compared to last year, indicating a growing trend that aligns with our 2024 PE outlook. 4️⃣ Fundraising still resilient: Despite market fluctuations, PE fundraising remains resilient. Tracking in line with last year, which itself was a record-breaking period, fundraising efforts show no signs of slowing down. With $100 billion in capital raised across 10 large open funds approaching final close in H1 2024, the landscape remains robust, albeit with potential fluctuations on the horizon.

GP-led deal activity to drive further secondaries market growth - https://lnkd.in/grCDtjdx As liquidity constraints put pressure on the private equity industry, the secondaries market is expected to grow substantially over the next twelve months, with fundraising and deal flow set to expand, according to Investec’s latest Secondaries Report, Charting a Course for Further Growth.

One of the industry’s pioneers of GP-led secondaries has just sealed off an oversubscribed fundraise for the traditional side of the secondaries market. Intermediate Capital Group (ICG), the London Stock Exchange-listed asset manager and private markets specialist, has successfully secured $1bn for its inaugural LP-led secondaries fund, LPS I. Including co-investment special purpose vehicles and separately managed accounts, total commitments amount to $1.6bn. The firm said it has already made seven LP deals worth over $1.5bn in net asset value and unfunded commitments, including a reported $200m purchase from the Cummins UK Pension Plan. Of the $86.3bn in total assets that ICG has under management, around 70% of this is allocated to private equity and private credit. However, the firm is known for being among the first movers in the GP-led secondaries space via its ICG Strategic Equity platform, which was set up a decade ago when such deals were painted as “zombie funds” and years away from becoming mainstream, as they are today. Since then it has gone on to invest more than $12bn into continuation funds. The rise of LPS I tracks with the recent flurry of LP-led secondaries activity, which accounts for more than half of all deal volume as of 2023. Persistently high-interest rates continue to pinch M&A and therefore private equity exits, prompting allocators to seek liquidity by other means. This is fuelling the most abundant secondary fundraising environment on record. #secondaries #privateequity #PE
