Our 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐭𝐞 𝐅𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 series for the HOTBIO consortium kicks off with our coordinating institute, the Arctic University of Norway (UiT), where the icy waters of the Arctic are a treasure trove of marine biodiscovery! 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐔𝐢𝐓: Established in 1968, UiT- The Arctic University of Norway is the northernmost university in the world, offering unique opportunities for research in Arctic environments. It is renowned for its strong focus on Arctic and marine research, making significant contributions to understanding and utilizing the Arctic’s natural resources. As part of this effort, the Marbio research group provides a platform for the discovery of bioactive marine natural products. Researchers at Marbio investigate various kinds of marine (micro)organisms for metabolic contents and bioactivity. This research involves sampling and identifying (micro)organisms, which is done in close collaboration with Marbank, producing extracts and isolates, bioactivity testing, dereplication, structure elucidation, and so on. Besides the HOTBIO project, Marbio is participating in various other projects, including but not limited to EUREMAP and MOSTFUN. 🌟 𝐃𝐘𝐊?: Did you know? UiT’s strategic location provides unparalleled access to the Arctic Ocean, enabling groundbreaking research in marine biotechnology. The university’s researchers have discovered numerous bioactive compounds from Arctic marine organisms, paving the way for innovative applications in medicine and industry. 🔬 𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Marbio has developed state-of-the-art tools to advance natural product research. One notable tool is the Bioassay-Guided Fractionation technique, which helps in isolating and identifying bioactive compounds from marine organisms. Additionally, the lab utilizes advanced metabolomics and genomics approaches to explore the chemical diversity of Arctic marine life. How do you think UiT’s location influences its research and academic programs? Feel free to share your experiences in the comments! #HOTBIO #ArcticUniversityofNorway #MarineBiodiscovery #ResearchExcellence #MSCA #ResearchImpactEU #HorizonEU #Innovation

This biological process is among one of my major curiosities!!! 🪼BIOLUMINESCENCE 🪼and how it cannot be!! The process is so mesmerising in itself. It’s been long and I didn’t get a chance to share my paper with you all under the guidance of my Prof Sakshi Tewari titled on: 🎯‘Next generation bioluminescence imaging technology for tracking numerous biological processes under in vivo conditions’ published in International Journal of Animal Biotechnology and Applications. 🦠From glowing caves to the frenzied flickering of the flying night lights, bioluminescence is a mesmerising phenomenon revered by many but understood by few🦠. Earlier, coal miners filled jars with fireflies and dried fish skin crawling with bioluminescent bacteria, to serve as lanterns. The process originates from a chemical reaction of a substrate called luciferin and enzyme luciferase. It’s a kind of oxidation reaction like fire 🔥 📌The paper has highlighted the growing📈 optical field of bioluminescence imaging where it is playing a vital role due to its high sensitivity in living entities as there is no requirement for external illumination along with it’s benefits over other techniques like MRI and SPECT. #bioluminescence #journalspub #biotechnology #paper #research #biology #living #discoveries #science #news

For more than a decade, we've worked with our customers and seeding labs to get technology into the hands of talented scientists and deserving laboratories who might not otherwise have access to drive scientific research. Help us seed labs around the world when you trade in your old thermal cycler. Meet the team! 👨🔬 Davide Liberti holds a PhD degree in Biotechnology from Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II, with a thesis focused on "Microalgae as biorefinery: development of processes for the green extraction of high added value antioxidants". This approach was implemented in the microalgae Porphyridium cruentum 🧪 He then decided to join us here at sunny Algarve, where he is currently a Postdoc researcher in the RHE-MEDiation project, working on bioremediation of wastewater. If he was a microalgae he would be "Porphyridium cruentum, since it is a versatile microalga with a hidden potential ready to be unlocked". It is good to know that after 3 intensive years of working with this species, he continues to think of it 😅 #MarBiotech #Microalgae #Research #Innovation #CCMAR #Biotechnology

Repost: @biotechnologyguy Xenobots are more environmentally friendly and safer for human health as a biological machinery, the study suggests. It may all sound like something weird from a dystopian sci-fi movie, but the researchers say there is no need for get worried about it. About Xenobots: One of the most successful creations has two stumpy legs that propel it along on its “chest”. Another has a hole in the middle that researchers turned into a pouch so it could shimmy around with miniature payloads. Xenobots are named after the African clawed frog i.e. Xenopus laevis from which the stem cells arw taken. The xenobots are less than a millimeter (0.04 inches) wide i.e. small enough to travel inside human bodies. They can work together in groups and can walk, swim and survive for weeks without food .
