COSEC has officially began! 👏 Last week, the kick-off of the project #COSEC - Biogenic CO2 capture into Sustainable Energy Carriers - happened at Universidade do Algarve. The project is focused on the development of a circular bioenergy system that recycles biogenic CO2 emissions to produce energy-rich algae biomass. All the partners gathered during the day, where the overview and planning of the project were discussed and, in the afternoon, we had breakout sessions to define timelines of the work to be developed within each workpackage. Our students Filipa Pinheiro, NICOLLE GUIMARÃES PRATES and Bárbara Vieira participated in the summit organized by H2O & Sustainability Innovation HUB, PremiValor Consulting and Universidade do Algarve, where the knowledge about the sustainability of water was exchanged between companies/organizations, startups, universities and researchers from all over the country. 💦 Since the H2O&Sustainability innovation HUB is an international innovation accelerator, the participants were allowed to present a pitch for their innovative water solution. After our holiday break, we return with a bang! 💥 Professor João Varela was invited as a Keynote Speaker to the 5th Blue Think Conference, organized by the PhD Student's Committee at CIIMAR, where he talked about "Microalgae: a web of knowledge and opportunities" during the Marine Biotechnology session. Prof. João reminded the students about the importance of being critical about the papers PhD students read and use as a basis for their research, he talked about the latest advancements regarding the taxonomy of microalgae groups, he shared about his scientific career and main scientific milestones and shared some of his vast knowledge about microalgae! Meet the team! 👩🔬 With a background in Dietetics and Nutrition and an MSc in Management of Healthcare Units, Mélanie Silva joined our lab during her master in Food Technology from Universidade do Algarve to develop her thesis entitled "Establishment of microalgae as functional food with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties". 💊 Mélanie is now doing her PhD, where she is searching for novel microalgae-based natural compounds with a role against inflammation, in the scope of the Algae4IBD project. When asked about the most amusing thing she  discovered while working with microalgae in the lab, Mélanie is "always surprised when I discover how many microalgae species exist, and their versality in applications and products.
