When it comes to health care safety, a major consideration for the CDC is health care-associated infections (HAIs), which arise during medical or surgical care. While this year’s National and State Healthcare-Associated Infections Progress Report showed measurable progress in the country’s effort to prevent many important HAIs in some health care facilities, others showed little progress, highlighting the continued need for enrichment of infection prevention and control practices. 👉Just published: Chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) bathing has proven to reduce central line–associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI) in hospitalized patients. The aim of this study is to evaluate whether the implementation of a compliance monitoring process for CHG bathing and strict hand hygiene as part of the traditional CLABSI prevention bundle will reduce the overall hospital CLABSI standardized infection ratio (SIR). 👉Read it in PATIENT SAFETY: https://lnkd.in/euqpmJbX

ASCP Daily Diagnosis 12/08 CST Hospital-associated infections declined significantly at acute-care hospitals in 2022, although rates at other health care facilities remained relatively stagnant, according to a CDC report. Hospitals should continue to prioritize this work and invest in the resources needed to implement and sustain effective infection prevention strategies. This is essential for safe, high-quality health care.

Nice reading 'Reducing Operating Room Traffic: Key to Preventing Surgical Site Infections'. However, this is already known and addressed for decades, even in the bundle strategies introduced and implemented many years ago. Always wondering why so many studies are repeated over and over again, addressing then the same message, even this one: "Overall, the findings underscore the significance of monitoring and reducing OR traffic as a fundamental strategy in preventing SSIs and enhancing patient safety. By implementing these and other targeted interventions to minimize unnecessary traffic and streamline workflow processes, health care facilities can effectively mitigate infection risks and optimize surgical outcomes."

FAQs: 🩸Bloodstream Infection (BSI) Events Why are central line CATHETER TIPS NOT used to meet NHSN LCBI criteria? 🤔Catheter tip cultures are not used for NHSN CLABSI surveillance for several reasons. 1️⃣ Catheter tip cultures have been shown to have higher rates of contamination than blood cultures. 2️⃣ Furthermore, not all laboratories are able to perform quantified catheter tip cultures. 3️⃣Catheter tips are a part of other types of non-NHSN surveillance, such as catheter-related BSI (CRBSI), which is generally thought of as a clinical definition used when diagnosing and treating patients. ❓The Guidelines for the Prevention of Intravascular Catheter-Related Infections, 2011 address CRBSI and may be helpful when addressing a physician’s questions. https://lnkd.in/eYRySjHJ

Sepsis is a life-threatening emergency that happens when a body's response to an infection that damages vital organs, and often causes death. More than 1.7 million people in the U.S. are diagnosed with sepsis each year, and, of those, about 350,000 adults die, according to the Sepsis Alliance. This webinar will increase your understanding of sepsis and provide infection prevention and control strategies to prevent sepsis. This webinar, presented by the Iowa HHS and ECRI, is designed for Iowa’s frontline healthcare workers with a focus on those who interact in any capacity with persons seeking healthcare, including physicians, nurses, patient care technicians, and non-clinical staff. Speakers: ─ Margaret Miller, BS, MT(ASCP)M, CIC, FAPIC, Infection Preventionist, ECRI ─ Keith St. John, MS, CIC, FAPIC, Independent Infection Prevention Consultant, ECRI Register for this FREE webinar. The COVID-19 pandemic had effects in the healthcare system that will echo for years. Will there be trauma or growth from this? Only time will tell. My work in infection prevention and control saw an increase in hospital acquired infections and a decrease in staff members as many left healthcare. In the pandemic, and beyond, we grapple with COVID-19 outbreaks but will need to divide our attention with that, and other infections that have always been around; urinary tract infections, hospital acquired pneumonias, central venous catheter bloodstream infections, surgical site infections, and the list goes on. https://lnkd.in/g6z-j-nZ
