The Climate 3-4-1: “These new politicians can’t see history repeating itself…that’s bad for democracy” “I’ve changed my worldview; now I recognise this is here to stay. We are living in revolutionary times and this transition is going to happen.” Conversations on Climate Season 3, Episode 5 [Part 2]: The Rt Hon Chris Skidmore OBE, former MP and Minister of State for Energy and Clean Growth THREE ways to describe Chris (in my words): Principled – Wonkish – Frank FOUR things I learnt: WESTMINSTER ISN’T EVEN THAT IMPORTANT ANYMORE. Chris sees MPs as behind the curve and believes real progress will be made at the local government level and through activist pressure. He believes he will achieve more for net zero outside of Parliament than within it. CLIMATE IS THE ‘GOLDEN THREAD’ UNITING MARGINAL SEATS IN 2024. The battlelines will be the economy and public services – and climate action could be the key to regenerating both. Dozens of Tory seats have <3% majorities, but will strategists get the message? CHRIS SUPPORTS LABOUR’S CLIMATE POSITIONS FOR THE NEXT ELECTION. Starmer’s moratorium on new fossil licenses, and the Party’s mission-based approach to issues like a net-zero grid, get his approval. More important than money is an IRA-style commitment for the long-term. THE NEXT PM SHOULD APPOINTMENT A CLIMATE ENVOY. We are squandering our global leadership at COPs, whilst missing out on new policy ideas in the process. The UK needs its own John Kerry. ONE question for you: Chris argues that we should separate climate action (as a technical challenge) from other divisive cultural issues under the banner of ESG. Can – should? – we try to strategically ‘depoliticise’ climate to secure support for implementation? Let me know your answers in the comments. Until next time – keep the climate conversation going! In partnership with the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication, Potential Energy Coalition has carried out a great study to look at political and policy messaging on climate. Their findings? 1. The world is united in wanting climate action. 2. We have more in common than we think. 3. Winning policy debates requires strong framing. 4. A big narrative moves the world and can tip the balance of public opinion. Check out the report here: https://lnkd.in/g4wmWFeC
