Grow your knowledge about the state-of-the-art in seismic resiliency for bridges this July and August. Join us for summer enrichment as we gather industry colleagues and experts for this premier virtual workshop event. The 3-part series, happening @ lunchtime on Wednesdays every other week, offers interactive sessions aimed at providing valuable insight on innovative solutions to enhance seismic resiliency on bridge rehabilitation and construction projects. Each session will provide in-depth information across various aspects of structural enhancement of bridges to resist seismic events – from strengthening the substructure to options for managing seismic events to unique alternatives to bearing replacements. The workshops will include interactive Q&A capabilities throughout each presentation, with subject-matter-experts delivering best practices and lessons learned aimed at helping you address a wide range of seismic resiliency challenges. Did you know the NATM tunnelling method is originated in Austria? The NATM (New Austrian Tunneling Method) originated in Austria in the 1950s. It was developed by Austrian engineer Ladislaus von Rabcewicz, together with other engineers like Leopold Müller and Franz Pacher. The method revolutionised tunnel construction by emphasising flexibility, adapting to ground conditions, and using systematic observational techniques during excavation. NATM has since been widely adopted for tunneling projects worldwide due to its effectiveness and adaptability. In the UK, SCL tunnelling method which is very similar to NATM with a few changes in principles has replaced NATM after a tunnelling incident in the UK.

The Rock Mechanics Series - Post 03: Hoek-Brown vs. Mohr-Coulomb - A Practical Showdown Egypt's current projects heavily involve rock mechanics. A geotechnical report for a major project caught my eye. It proposed a soil model based on converting Hoek-Brown parameters to Mohr-Coulomb, a questionable approach. This post will: •Demystify the conversion process from Hoek-Brown to Mohr-Coulomb. •Put these models to the test with real-world examples: trench stability and slope stability analyses. •Reveal the surprising results and discuss their implications for your projects.

Thrilled to share a glimpse into the progressive world of seismic safety! 🌍🏗️ In my latest study, I've tracked the remarkable journey of Buckling Restrained Braces (BRBs) from their inception to becoming a seismic retrofit marvel. The chart I'm sharing encapsulates years of innovation and growth in a snapshot. 📈 Seismic Performance: The red curve illustrates the monumental strides we've made in enhancing the seismic performance of structures with BRBs - the steeper the climb, the stronger our buildings stand against the shakes of nature. 🔗 Adoption Rate: The blue dashed line tells a story of adoption, a testament to the building industry's growing trust in BRBs. It's a classic tale of innovation adoption, starting with a slow embrace and surging as the method proves its mettle. This visual tale is more than lines on a graph - it's about our dedication to making the built environment safer and more resilient, one brace at a time. The X-axis (Horizontal): Time, from the inception of BRBs to the present day. The Y-axis (Vertical): This will have two scales; the left side for Seismic Performance Improvement (potentially as a percentage or a categorical scale from low to high), and the right side for Adoption Rate (number of projects or percentage of all retrofitting projects using BRBs). #StructuralEngineering #Innovation #SeismicSafety #BRBs #Infrastructure
