We’re thrilled to share that we've been selected by Network Rail to deliver its capital delivery frameworks for almost a quarter of Britain’s railway network. Comprising of 571 stations in the North-West and Central region, in collaboration with Network Rail, we commit to driving down CO2 emissions, reducing waste and increasing recycling, as well as delivering improvement in biodiversity net gain on every project site. Our aim is to reduce carbon by at least 80% by 2035. Awarded five lots across the Category B and C frameworks, we will also provide electrification and plant works across the region for the next five years, with the opportunity for a two-year extension. Today Infrastructure Net Zero was launched, why is it so important? 🤝 Because for the scale and pace of action that we need to achieve net zero, #collaboration around the shared #netzero ambition is key. Bringing government, industry and independent experts together will get us there faster. 🌏 Because 70% of Australia's #emissions are related to infrastructure assets - how they're built, operated, and used. 🚄 Because Australia has a LOT of infrastructure assets in the pipeline, and we need to ask: which ones do we actually need for a net zero future? Which ones are not compatible with this future? And how do we build, operate and maintain them in a way that is least emissions-intensive? There is a lot of work to be done, and this initiative has the right organisations around the table and leadership to achieve great things and make sure Australia's infrastructure assets service the net zero goal. Well done Nicole Lockwood and Ainsley Simpson for getting us there, as well as to all others involved. I'm proud to have contributed to this with my team at Climateworks Centre. Onwards and upwards! PS: A major breakdown on the XPT train service from Melbourne to Sydney sadly prevented me from attending the launch. This is the 3rd major incident in 3 trips to Sydney on the XPT trains. What is the role of #lightrail in achieving sustainable #urbanmobility and #netzero goals. A clear roadmap to accelerate light rail adoption in the net-zero era, focusing on renewable energy usage, innovative vehicle design, effective lifecycle management, strategic communication, public engagement, and support of policies. Government and stakeholders can significantly contribute to the development of sustainable and efficient light rail systems that meet the challenges of global net-zero targets. Fundamentally, the transition towards sustainable urban transportation and the achievement of net-zero targets necessitates a holistic and innovative approach to light rail adoption. The technical and operational advancements are required but also the importance of strategic communication, community engagement, and supportive policies. Becoming completely carbon neutral and sourcing 100% of OUR energy from renewable sources exemplifies the potential impact of committed environmental stewardship within the light rail sector. Additionally a significant shift towards more efficient and less polluting hybrid-vehicle type and allowing innovation in response to environmental challenges and the reuse of our mothballed infrastructure.
