For too long, teaching has been an isolated, one-size-fits-all job that requires each educator to do it all. Teachers and students deserve better. A recent national survey by EdWeek sheds light on the immense workload teachers face, with an average of 57 hours per week, yet less than half of that time is spent on actual teaching. It's clear: we need change. Just over a year ago, we co-founded the Coalition to Reimagine the Teaching Role to create the conditions where all K-12 educators thrive in collaborative and sustainable roles, so that all students realize their unique potential. 💡 The core of our work has always been about strengthening how teaching happens and making it a team sport to get better results for students—and we do get standout results. At All Means All, we are dedicated to transforming outcomes for students with disabilities and other intersectional identities that have been historically marginalized. We start by partnering with school leaders to thoroughly analyze and disaggregate historical data and then build inclusive and ambitious goals to address disparities. Leaders develop plans through our multiple learning cycles that draw on adult leadership skills and practical tools to target specific areas of disproportionality such as reading, math, post-secondary success, or social-emotional growth. This creates a proof point, demonstrating what is possible and generating momentum to continue eliminating disparities beyond the program. Join us for our fourth cohort as we work toward more inclusive, supportive learning environments where all students can thrive academically and socially. 🌟 Apply Here: https://lnkd.in/gQhAz_25 🌟 📈 Check Out Our Results: https://lnkd.in/gSZQGq3R 📊

As Teacher Appreciation Week approaches, let’s take a moment to celebrate the incredible dedication and passion our teachers bring to the classroom each day. Consider these memorable experiences to recognize and honor their invaluable contributions: 1. Personalized Video Messages: Organize a video compilation where students, parents, and school staff share heartfelt messages, stories, or memories about their favorite teachers. Each contributor can speak about the specific impact the teacher has had on them or offer thanks for specific qualities that make the teacher special. This can be presented as a surprise during a school assembly or shared digitally with the teachers. 2. Professional Development Grant: Create a "Thank You Fund" where teachers can apply to receive grants for professional development opportunities such as workshops, courses, or conferences that they are interested in. This not only shows appreciation but also invests in their growth and development as educators, which is beneficial to their career and student learning experiences. 3. Theme Day Celebration: Organize a special theme day in honor of teachers, like "Walk in Their Shoes" day where students and administrators perform some of the roles and duties of a teacher. This could include leading a class, preparing lesson materials, or managing classroom activities. This not only serves as a fun role reversal but also deepens appreciation for the hard work teachers do daily. Teachers, your tireless efforts do not go unnoticed, and the impact you make extends far beyond the classroom walls. Thank you for inspiring curiosity, encouraging growth, and nurturing future leaders. We recognize and appreciate all that you do! #TeacherAppreciationWeek #ThankATeacher

↓ How can we improve the retrieval of prior knowledge? ↓ Reading time = 1.5 mins When we are introducing new knowledge to pupils, building on prior knowledge is key. It helps us to avoid overload of working memory (Willingham, 2009). However, simply accessing prior knowledge is not enough – the learner may not make the necessary links between what they already know and what they are being taught now. This shows us why it is important to begin a lesson by accessing prior knowledge, before we teach anything new. PKC has been carefully sequenced so that foundational knowledge is taught before pupils move on to more complex knowledge. There are two important points to consider at the prior learning stage of a lesson: 1. We want to recall prior knowledge, but pupils may have a lack (or varying levels) of knowledge 2. We want to check for understanding of prior knowledge as pupils may have misconceptions We must think carefully about the questions we ask pupils. If we ask, ‘what do you know about WWII?’ – the question is too broad, and we won’t get pupils recalling the knowledge well. Instead, we should be more specific - ‘what role did Bletchley Park play in WWII?’ This provides a retrieval cue that allows pupils to recall what they know and tell the teacher. The teacher then assesses this against what pupils need to know for the lesson. If knowledge is not secure, the teacher will spend some time re-teaching it. It is important to check for the understanding of all pupils at this stage, so that misconceptions or misunderstandings are addressed. We must not fall into the trap of trying to start from where we expect pupils to be, and instead start from where they are currently at. To check the understanding of all, we can use checks that enable all to participate: • Talk partners • Mini whiteboards • Multiple choice quizzes How do expert teachers approach prior learning? Expert teachers take the entire PKC journey into account. When teaching a unit, they look at the curriculum map, subject rationale, unit rationale and the prior learning part of a lesson plan. They will reflect on these two questions: • What knowledge have pupils already learnt that can help them to understand the new knowledge? • How can I link the new knowledge to their prior knowledge? Mini task – think about a unit you will teach soon. Write down the prior knowledge pupils need to have to learn the new knowledge within the unit. Find our upcoming CPD here:
