Great read from NY Times (4.26.24) on the rise of video podcasting - leveraging audio platform/podcast to drive larger audiences and meaningful ad revenue with concurrent video production, delivery, and media distribution. Some insiders cite that relative to an audio-only advertisement, a 60-second video ad read by the podcast host might bring in an extra 60 percent in revenue per 1,000 listens. The reach on YouTube was amazing. With YouTube search, recommendation, and small paid investment we saw about 10x views vs downloads on pod platforms. Discovery is a big point of difference. Audio discovery is hard. RSS feeds and multiple platforms don’t provide the scale that YouTube does. Maybe a good thing. This week marks a major milestone for our Dungeons & Dragons actual play series, Natural Six: the release of Episode 10 and the successful fulfillment and end of our Kickstarter! www.naturalsix.net Kickstarter: We raised £67,932 with the support of over 900 backers—24% of whom were first-time backers! We delivered digital and physical rewards, ranging from custom dice sets to digital wallpapers and the promised 10 full-length story episodes. Furthermore, we also hit a stretch goal of releasing all episodes as audio versions to major podcast platforms. Content: Episode one launched on April 2nd, and since then we’ve delivered 20 full-video and audio episodes—including 10 story episodes and an additional 10 episodes of Action Surge, our post-show debrief. We’ve also reached over 22,000 listeners on audio platforms, with each new episode showing 15-20% growth. All our content has been made possible thanks to the incredible production talents of DoubleJump Ltd. Channel Growth: • YouTube: Since launch, the channel has grown to 23,600 subs and generated over 800,000 views. • Twitch: Our fortnightly pre-show has helped generate an average CCV of 204 and an additional 25,000 live views. • Instagram: Over 6,000 followers, with Reels generating 500,000+ views. • TikTok: Grown to over 3,000 followers with 330,000+ views. • Discord: Our welcoming community now boasts 2,000+ members. Sponsorship Success: Partnering with the amazing team at YRS TRULY, we worked with Wizards of the Coast to produce a cross-platform Magic: The Gathering campaign focused on new players. Working with aficionado and expert, Adam The Gathering, the team built decks and battled it out live on Twitch. The campaign included a livestream, additional stand-alone VoD, short-form, and supporting socials. In addition, we introduced bespoke ad-reads for both video and audio content, made in our unique personal style. We hope to make even more announcements about sponsorships, live shows, and guest appearances very soon! Patreon: At the end of May, we launched a Patreon. Despite being a new group, initial growth has been incredible, with over 700 members (a mix of free and paid) and positive daily growth. Our Patreon offers a range of tiers from $1, offering a selection of videos for new members to sample, to $20, which includes a slew of additional and early-access content. Our Patreon offers our community a chance to support the future of Natural Six but also gives access to at least 11 pieces of Patreon-specific content a month. --- Natural Six isn’t fully self-funding right now, but we’re heading in the right direction. Thanks to early activations and support, we’re thrilled to say that the channel is on solid footing through to the end of the year. However, we're open to new partnerships and opportunities to keep the momentum going! We’re excited to see what the future brings, and we hope we’ll be telling stories for a long time to come.

#Podcast execs weren’t shy about how difficult of a year it was for their businesses, facing #advertising slowdowns and the challenges associated with a maturing medium. Despite the ghost of 2023 following them into the new year, heads of #podcasts at five companies were optimistic about 2024 when speaking with Digiday, sharing positive signals of continued #audiencegrowth, new advertising dollars coming into the medium and opportunities to expand shows into franchises. But they still face stiff competition as podcast networks fight to gain listeners and push into video to grow the reach of their content.
