Invest in prevention and early intervention! 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾

I have a passion for keeping our adolescents out of jail/detention: I recently spoke with a senior about this topic. She told me that placing these young people in jail would teach them hard lessons and make them better citizens. I shared my firm belief that there are alternatives. I gave her a copy of my new book, which includes lived experiences and researched data stating that the other options are better for our future and community safety. I shared four approaches that must be implemented soon: ** Community-based day treatment programs engaging youth and family ** Behavioural treatment interventions ** Group homes where treatment modalities address risk factors. ** Employ professional, trained staff. "87% of juvenile offenders released from state-operated facilities are rearrested within three years." (worldmetric.org) After having an amazing meeting with a Hamilton County (OH) agency director, Coach Mike D.A. was galvanized to do some more research on juvenile recidivism. From his own past experience, he knew things were bad, however the stats were mind-blowing: • Approximately 75% of juvenile offenders released from detention facilities are rearrested within three years. • One study found that 45% of juvenile offenders were rearrested within 12 months. • Juveniles with prior court referrals are 77% more likely to be rearrested. and list goes on. Excited to share a piece I wrote for Vital City on the power of transparent data. Sharing and collectively reviewing data on processes and outcomes with justice system partners paves the way for stronger, more confident advancements in programs and policies. What is working and what needs attention? Shared data and a commitment to growth are key for instilling confidence in new and growing programs like pretrial supervised release. At a time when it’s tempting to believe that the justice reform movement has lost momentum and that elected officials are unwilling to take risks to build a more humane and effective response to crime, it’s energizing to read this report from California. Can we hope that fundamental prison reform can set the pace for the next chapter of justice reform? Can human dignity become our new North Star? Thanks to everyone who worked on this report and Gov.
