🇮🇸 I went to Iceland and all you got was this post. 🇮🇸 Last week, I went to Iceland Innovation Week to participate in a panel debate on why startups should focus on building the B Corp mindset into their business. There are several different reasons to why people fall in love with B Corp, and I believe you can gather them into 3 reasons: The Mission Lock 🔒 Mission Lock means formally and legally committing to serving all stakeholders. And it sends out a strong signal internally and externally. By doing Mission Lock you are making sure that stakeholder interest is at the highest governing body of the company with an obligation to aligning long-term interests and deliver significant positive impact for people and the planet. The B Corp Movement 🌊 B Corp is founded as a movement towards a new capitalistic paradigm. And you cannot create a new capitalistic paradigm alone. And thus, B Corps collectively raise their voice, collaborate, inspire each other, and partner up to drive their responsibility even further. The B Corp Certification 📈 This is probably also the most well-known part of the B Corp world: The B Corp certification. While the certification is a value stamp to provide evidence for living up to high standards within social and environmental performance, I am actually much more in love with the B Impact Assessment. The B Impact Assessment is a free, online measurement and management impact performance platform that guides a company towards a more responsible business conduct.  Basically it provides a company with a recipe on how to structure policies, practices, outputs and outcomes in a way that provides value for alle stakeholders. Did I mention it was free? Together with me on stage was Michael J. Wiatr from LastObject, Ólöf Inga Stefansdottir from 66°North and Rakel Eva Sævarsdóttir who provided great inputs to how becoming and being a B Corp looks like in practice. Thank you for a nice conversation about – in my opinion – one of the most important topics in the world: How companies can help the world progress towards an equitable, regenerative, and inclusive for all people and the planet. Day 4 of TechFest is done! ✅ Today's a BIG recap for a BIG day - The Invest Hong Kong Future of Environment & Sustainability Day! Before we jump into highlights, we want to give Mr. G - Galeno Chua a HUGE ngā mihi for MC'ing a massive day today. He was incredible! Grace de Leon from the Smart City Christchurch team shared the innovations of testing and trailing sustainability tech - including rubbish bins that compact rubbish on site using solar power to reduce the number of times. She talked about the approach The Christchurch City Council is leading the region in digital twin for the city to incorporate the wider region to ensure digital equity and interoperability. Miho Tanaka Gumpp from Callaghan Innovation introduced engineers Ryan McKinlay and Nathan Allpress about an eel-safe water pump and their work to develop lighter electric engines for airplanes super-conductors used in aircraft requiring. Melissa Baer from Backstory shared her years of experience as farmers’ daughter view of point of how story-telling is more likely to drive customer behaviour that certifications. She told her fascinating journey from chicken farmer to tech entrepreneur. Barry Lynch from V-Quest told us that on the horizon to get a building consent you will need to measure and know your embodied carbon and sustainability credentials. If you can design in software like Revet you can use V-Quest now to calculate your carbon as you design. Barry predicts that building contractor will be competing not on price but on carbon performance in the near future. Sheralee MacDonald from Orion NZ Ltd shared her insight on reducing Canterbury's emissions and introduced the audience to two great local energy tech research projects and innovators - Michael Fitzgerald of Empower Energy and Justin Lobb of ArcActive - both helping tackle our energy emission reduction targets. We closed the day out with incredible startup insights from Invest Hong Kong team Jayne Chan, Dr. Luca De Leonardis. Did you know that 27% of founders in HK come from overseas? Many are from the UK and Australia! Invest Hong Kong finished off with Mr. G - Galeno Chua fascilitating one last panel with Scott Callaway from the Christchurch International Airport Limited, Heather Gallagher of Cathay Pacific and Pier Smulders of Alibaba Group. They all shared inspiring stories of global companies implementing sustainable initiatives across their companies like using zero carbon to heat and cool an airport, providing customers with experiences to reduce their carbon emissions and eliminating single-serve plastics. All-in-all, it was a massive day full of inspiring talks, incredible stories and knowledge sharing and lots of connections. Thank you to everyone who came! ** Exciting News ** This has been a while coming, but I am pleased to finally announce I have taken on a new position, as CEO for EMEA for Verv I have been looking for the right home for a while now, and there has been much support offered from a number of people whom I would like to thank, but too many to tag here! It has been a fascinating journey of discovery. Looking at more innovation roles in industry, I realised the traditional sector was looking too short term, and really not looking to the future. Innovation was not on their radar. Sustainability was. When researching the book I am writing with Dr Amy, it was clear that Sustainability was a driver of significant change. And rightly so. Innovation and Technology were the How. Not the Why. I had been going down the wrong lines. If I were to instigate real change, sustainability would be the route. In Amsterdam, I was approached by Stephen Rouatt, who suggested he introduce me to Verv, and the Founder Peter Davies, who was leaving for the US to take up a position in the prestigious LA CleanTech Incubator; one of only three companies globally to be selected, and recognised as one of the most innovative business incubators in the world by UBI. Could I support him with growing the business was the simple question? The tech (13 global patents) and team (a mixture of data scientists and engineers) made me realise this was the firm to really support my ambitions of making a global business in the real estate sector, and wider built environment, and I am pleased to say, my initial weeks have reassured me, this could be a business that could make a real difference. With 4% of global energy consumption being wasted through heating and cooling systems, I know the Verv solution of a smart, AI powered isolator could help all sorts of businesses; Landlords, Data Aggregators, BMS systems so reach out if there are any questions.
