Aren't all geeks a little bit introverted and socially awkward?"   These are 2 examples of questions Dennie got when he disclosed he is on the autism spectrum. But those are two different questions. Autism is not only about being introverted and being socially awkward. Autism is about having a brain that is wired different. Persons on the autism spectrum may make different connections, assumptions and have more need for clarity. Join this conversation to hear what does help and what doesn't.   Dennie is Microsoft MVP Developer Technologies and has experience in accessibility with Microsoft technologies. In daily life Dennie is president and developer at DDSoft, a nonprofit that connects IT to People who are less tech-savvy. Dennie invented technical solutions and systems to help people with disabilities to participate in their daily life. Thanks to his autism he's the right man at the right spot to contribute as a volunteer in function of people with disabilities.

🇨🇦 As a dedicated Canadian fan and advocate for people with autism, my connection with “SOUTH PARK” has been multifaceted, appreciating its sharp satire seen in works like “SOUTH PARK: JOINING THE PANDERVERSE” and episodes such as “The Worldwide Privacy Tour” and “Cupid Ye”. Despite its groundbreaking approach, the show frequently skirts the edges of controversy and legal issues. ♾️ In my advocacy for diversity, inclusion and the representation of people with autism in the media, I recognize an urgent need for evolution in “SOUTH PARK”. Its traditional focus on current events, while iconic, increasingly leads to polarizing reactions and legal complexities. This situation has led me to an important realization: it’s time for a substantial change in the show’s direction. 💡 This idea is the foundation of my project, “SOUTH PARK: THE LITTLE MOUNTAIN SHOW!”, a sequel-reboot in an alternate continuity. The term “sequel-reboot” I use is a blended combination of a direct sequel and soft reboot, except it’s set in an alternate continuity. Inspired by character-focused series like “Bob’s Burgers”, this approach moves away from current events to concentrate on rich character development, inclusive humor, and special guest voices. I assert that my ‘sequel-reboot’ project is the only way to navigate “SOUTH PARK” away from controversial grounds, which includes indefinitely postponing the planned 2024-2027 specials on Paramount+. This new direction is vital, especially in creating media that respects and accurately represents the diversity of experiences, including those of the autism community. By adapting, “SOUTH PARK” can maintain its satirical edge while being considerate and inclusive of all viewers. I share these reflections to initiate a dialogue about the future of “SOUTH PARK”and its role in a culturally diverse and evolving world. How can it remain pertinent and sensitive to a variety of audiences, including the autism community? How can it positively contribute to discussions around diversity and inclusion? If you still believe that neurotypical people are merely a group requiring additional care and support, it is time to change your perspective. April 2nd is marked as World Autism Awareness Day by the United Nations, kicking off World Autism Month for the year. In 2024, the theme of this official health-related day is "Moving from Surviving to Thriving: Autistic Individuals Share Regional Perspectives," addressing the importance of accepting and appreciating autistic individuals' contributions to society, rather than solely focusing on their needs and providing support. We are all encouraged to: ✅ Continue spreading awareness of Autism issues ✅ Follow social media and campaigns focusing on Autism ✅ Promote acceptance and understanding in the community ✅ Support Autism organizations Taking a further step, we may also: ✴ Share our experiences related to Autism with others ✴ Share resources related to Autism in our professional fields ✴ Connect with those who also closely follow Autism topics I will start this meaningful month by sharing with you a project I greatly appreciate - the Stanford Neurodiversity Project (SNP). It is a five-year project that works closely with schools, workplaces, and communities in the U.S. to help neurodivergent individuals showcase their talents and find their rightful place in society, including those with Autism. As an educator, I was particularly interested in the camp they organized: Stanford Neurodiversity Project - Research, Education, and Advocacy Camp for High Schoolers (SNP-REACH). Students learn about neurodiversity advocacy and the science behind neurodiversity. The small projects they create using the design thinking approach for their schools and communities are inspiring and heartwarming. For those that don't know, there are many things I'm truly passionate about. Helping people is near the top. That's why I do what I do. Help good people find good jobs and helping good companies find good people. And Public (motivational) speaking and leadership training. But wait, there's more. My hobby is racing cars. And there's one more really big passion.... my daughter. She's at the top of the list. She's also on the Autism Spectrum. So I've tied my hobby to my racing passion and I race the Autism Awareness Car. I also promote a large Autism Acceptance race. And, being that we are in Autism Awareness month and today is World Autism Awareness Day, it seems fitting to announce that I just started a Not-For-Profit called Racers For Autism. . I'll share the website once it's live. Racers For Autism is a not-for-profit organization formed to make a meaningful impact on individuals with Autism, their families and support centers by organizing fund-raising events intricately tied to the racing community, while concurrently disseminating vital information on where individuals can access necessary help and resources. The funds raised through these events will be channeled to various charities committed to supporting the Autism and Neuro-diverse communities. The Corporation has a profound commitment to fostering awareness and acceptance of Autism within society, and believes that through the synergy of fundraising, resource allocation and advocacy, a more inclusive world can be created where individuals with Autism are not just accepted but are celebrated for their unique abilities. In 2022 and 2023 we raised thousands of dollars for The Autism Society Greater Hudson Region, New York and Bring On The Spectrum. The Autism Society Greater Hudson Region, New York is a collective of people dedicated to providing resources and opportunities to the autism community in the 21 counties we serve. Our board, staff, and volunteers consist of individuals with autism, family members, and professionals who work with ASD populations. Our board of directors is a productive group of individuals with autism, families, and professionals from the autism community. Bring on the Spectrum is a 501 (c ) 3. whose mission is to support neurodiverse individuals with opportunities to achieve their best quality of life as a respected member of the Capital Region. They achieve this through social, recreational and lifestyle activities for individuals of all ages and abilities.

Tonight, I stand before you as an ambassador for AUTISM CANADA and a fervent advocate for a cause close to my heart: championing diversity and inclusion in the entertainment industry. My personal journey with autism has not only shaped my perspective but has also ignited a deep-seated passion to pave the way for others like me in the creative world. This passion is embodied in my project, “SOUTH PARK: THE LITTLE MOUNTAIN SHOW!”, a symbol of hope and a beacon for change. This initiative is more than a creative venture; it’s a clarion call for inclusivity in storytelling and a testament to the untapped potential within the autistic community. The entertainment industry, with platforms like Paramount+ stands on the cusp of a transformative era where diverse voices can and should be heard. While it’s true that many companies, including Paramount typically do not accept unsolicited pitches. I believe it’s time for a change! Big players in the entertainment sector need to recognize the value of opening their doors wider, to not just listen, but actively seek out new voices, particularly from individuals with autism. Our perspectives are unique, our stories untold, and our creativity boundless. It’s not just about giving us a chance; it’s about enriching the tapestry of storytelling with diverse threads. To my peers dreaming of breaking into this industry: Know that your voice matters. Your experiences, as shaped by autism, are your strength, not a limitation. When facing rejection, view it not as a setback, but as a step forward. Share your creative works, whether it’s scripts, pitch decks, or any form of artistic expression. Build your network tirelessly. Use platforms like LinkedIn to connect with industry professionals, and don’t hesitate to share your contact information for ongoing dialogue and updates. “Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much.” ~ Helen Keller ~ The day we received confirmation of my youngest son’s autism diagnosis, this quote became my North Star. And yet, finding community, learning where to locate services and supports, and figuring out how to navigate all the systems left me feeling lonely, confused, and frustrated. I wanted to learn from the parents and caregivers who walked this journey before me, and I wanted to pass that knowledge on to others. Not one to complain idly, I went all in, learned all I could, and created what I craved, when necessary. It started with founding a nonprofit in 2012, to “enhance the quality of life for children with special healthcare needs and their families across the lifespan.” When life sent our family to Florida in 2018, I started a consulting firm which supported nonprofits and small business owners, many with the shared mission to improve services and supports for neurodivergent people. In 2019, I took a role as the Director of Operations for the Maryland Developmental Disabilities Council, with a mission to "create change to make it possible for people with developmental disabilities to live the lives they want with the support they need." In 2023, we became multi-caregivers, meaning we provide care to 2 family members, and became a multi-generational home. The pressure of balancing work and life became too much, and I relaunched my consulting firm, under a new name, Christy Russell Consulting. BUT, after a year, it became apparent that my knowledge of the systems that support neurodivergent people was in higher demand than supporting people’s dream to start and successfully run a business. I realized that despite so many steps forward, parents and caregivers still struggled to navigate the systems that are supposed to support them. They want to hear directly from the professionals that support their neurodivergent kids, crave easy to find and understand information. They crave community - but barriers still exist. What if parents and caregivers could find community, access information and resources, participate in webinars and training, attend parent support group meetings, all from the palm of their hand? Imagine the possibility, the change, the transformation for neurodivergent people, parents and caregivers, AND the agencies and organizations that support them?
