Spine and discs: A bulge is not a big deal everywhere in the spine. Other places, is a big deal. Anatomy + Symptoms + physiology + environment helps paint an accurate picture. I’ve had many patients ask for an MRI and there’s NO finding that correlates to their pain and symptoms. Imaging doesn’t always offer answers. And yet it still helps. Pull together the whole picture with a skilled team, don’t chase pain. FYSA: MRIs in Eastern Europe can be $15. Yes, that’s right. England is €630 or so. They do not require a referral. Usually referrals are not to direct skill, but for insurance gate keepers. INSIDE A NUCLEAR POWERED "FAST ATTACK" SUBMARINE. These are not the ("boomer") subs that lie in waiting to launch nuclear-tipped ballistic missiles if - God forbid - orders come from POTUS and his officials. Instead, these are subs that carry out missions such as countering enemy subs, protecting our carrier task forces, launching tactical missiles against enemy positions, inserting/extracting SEALS, etc. They are very sophisticated machines.

Everyone seemed fascinated by my last VA Class video on how the pilots drive the boat, so I wanted to post another look at it. The CO does a much better job than I did explaining everything. I answered so many questions about submarine operations this week via DM that I wanted to start a video series in which curious people can ask submariners from all nations questions. I started with a '70s video about how to conduct an underhull because it explains everything well. Part 1 is a video with an MPA report sent to a patrolling sub! What questions do you have to start? You may have known people who served in the military, but have you ever known a US Marine and what sets them apart? Marines are trained to act with speed, intensity, purpose and exacting skill. It’s in every Marine’s mindset to defeat the challenges, obstacles, and adversaries that hinder their mission. They are able to assess each situation quickly and make strategic decisions according to the facts at hand and conditions on the ground. They are able to think, act, communicate and move with a sense of purpose to carry out their command's directives. Marines are made by constantly challenging them to make sound decisions with limited time, resources, or information. No Marine is more qualified to make tactical decisions than the small-unit leader on the battlefield. The Marine Corps concept of “Commander's Intent” ensures every Marine has a clear understanding of the commander's objective and the latitude to make decisions to win. You’ll never meet a current or former US Marine who doesn’t move without a sense of purpose, who isn’t precise, well groomed, tactfully proficient, deliberate, and always on point. It’s how we’re made and it can’t be unlearned!

We tend to focus on the strongest points of an organization. And we try to make them stronger. Then we compare them to other organizations. From my experience in the Allied Forces, I have learned that sometimes the weakest points are the most important to an organization. In the military in particular, the weakest points are more important than the strongest points. A military is like a long chain of anchors. Of course, the average strength of the chain is important. But if you have a chain with an anchor, the most important thing is not the average strength of the chain. The weakest part of the chain itself can cause huge problems for the anchor and the ship when tensions run high. In the military, we sometimes focus too much on making our capabilities better. But sometimes we need to focus more on our weakest points, which can cause destructive events. As a naval officer, I was too focused on the outside and on looking good. I believe that as an XO, I need to focus on the inside and on the embarrassing mistakes. It is time to work silently.

« He who knows only England does not know England." - Rudyard Kipling I particularly appreciate a small reflective ingredient at the heart of one of our exercises: comparing ourselves to the organization of the Marines (USA military corps). Especially ☝️ when the participants' culture, a priori, is far from a particular interest in the military… This is where the exercise becomes most enriching. What do we do? We quickly learn things about the organization of the Marines, either in depth or at a glance, or by filtering what suits us to say things that we would find more difficult or less clear to express without the pretext of these learnings about Marines. **How are we like the Marines? **How are we not like the Marines? **How would we like to be like the Marines? **How would we not like to be like the Marines? This concerns only a subgroup among others, but the feedback in the plenary session is always very interesting. (Spoiler alert: it almost never talks about the Marines anymore, and when the Marines are mentioned, it is to say something more easily by attributing it to the Marines.) This general module, in which we use this gem, is found in many of our customized session agendas. And we also have a pleasant and motivating (non-challenging) version in one of the exercises of REGROUP, our well-done team building.
