𝐅𝐑𝐎𝐌 𝐏𝐋𝐎𝐔𝐆𝐇𝐒 𝐓𝐎 𝐒𝐂𝐎𝐎𝐏𝐒 The nation has been experiencing a searing summer this year. It's worse in states like Rajasthan where farmers often face the harsh realities first with poor yields. But look at what these groups of farmers from Gangapur in Rajasthan have been doing. They saw an opportunity in the heat that made farming so difficult—a demand for something cool. Unlike Rajasthan, neighbouring states like Gujarat, UP, and Maharashtra, have a snacking culture, especially for ice cream. So each year, thousands of villagers from Gangapur migrate, repurposing old trucks into mobile ice cream vans. This seasonal migration has created an entire ecosystem in their hometown. There's an increase in the number of vehicle repair and print shops, stores selling stainless steel containers and ice cream supplies. Around 50,000 trucks are converted during summer every year, providing jobs and sustaining the local economy. Through this innovative ice cream business, many earn enough during the peak season to support their families year-round. The earnings have helped construct concrete houses and wells, improving living conditions in the drought-stricken region. Whenever I pass by these enterprising men working hard inside these bright neon fixtures proudly sporting Rajasthani art, I can’t help but feel inspired by them.
