🎤 As part of the FACHPACK expert forum PACKBOX Europe und Circular Economy, Valeska Haux, Vice President Strategic Marketing & Sustainability at SÜDPACK, talked about chemical recycling as an essential component of a circular plastics industry.   🍃 At SÜDPACK, we want to make closed-loop systems possible for all types of plastic packaging and therefore contribute to circular production in our industry. That’s why we are investing in chemical recycling as an alternative for composites which can’t be mechanically recycled and must therefore, according to the current state of technology, be consigned to thermal utilization. Chemical recycling can create valuable raw material from many of these composites for the production of virgin-grade plastic granules. The granules can then be used to manufacture e.g. high-performance films. Current legislation prohibits the use of mechanically recycled plastics for use in direct contact with packaged food, medical, and pharmaceutical products for reasons of quality and hygiene. This is why we see chemical recycling as a complementary method to mechanical recycling and an innovative solution that can contribute to a sustainable, closed-loop economy.   💡 Various LCAs confirm that chemical recycling is superior to thermal utilization, in particular in terms of carbon footprint. Although the upcoming PPWR has not yet provided a final definition for sustainable packaging, SÜDPACK has been exploring the key factors that contribute to product sustainability and the criteria we need to follow when developing new products to ensure they truly deserve the “sustainable” label. Accordingly, we have updated our roadmap for sustainable film solutions with the goal of combining the following properties and factors: ✅ Recyclability ✅ Material efficiency/resource conservation ✅ Alternative raw materials such as bio-based, synthetic plastics that are of non-fossil origin ✅ Regranulates and recyclates (PIR – post-industrial recyclate and PCR – post-consumer recyclate) ✅ Eco-balance of our products along the process chain   All of these points as a whole are relevant for SÜDPACK if we want to reach our sustainability and CO₂e reduction goals. Above all, recyclability and films with recyclate content will become increasingly important as the circular economy in the plastics industry expands and the EU’s PPWR takes effect. On October 9, the Packaging Valley Germany e. V. Sustainability Day 2024 will take place. This event is an important forum for the packaging machinery industry, providing a platform for insights, dialog, and discussions on sustainability within the sector.   Attendees can look forward to the presentation, “Sustainable Packaging Materials: An Overview of the PPWR and Its Impacts – Requirements for Machinery Manufacturing,” by Holger Hoss, Head of Strategic Product Management at SÜDPACK.   💡 The PPWR is a systematic implementation of the EU Plastics Directive, aimed at reducing resource consumption and driving the packaging industry’s transition from a linear to a circular economy. Flexible packaging is already leading the way in terms of material reduction. When developing sustainable packaging solutions, it is essential to consider not only recyclability but also the environmental impact. To ensure process reliability, close collaboration with the packaging machinery industry is crucial when developing new solutions.   Holger Hoss will provide an overview of the PPWR, its goals, and timeline. He will also explain how the PPWR is factored into the development of flexible packaging solutions. Whereas the technology of plastic recycling itself is not new, their approach is different from what is currently on the market in two major ways: 1. Material quality: they have yet to encounter a single recycler of ocean-bound plastic who is able to deliver material of comparably high quality and precise mechanical and chemical properties. 2. They add value to the material through their impact driven business model. While the material itself is fit to replace virgin plastic in several applications, it also creates enormous environmental and social value. On top of that, the material is fully traceable and therefore compatible with the concept of a circular economy. Both of those value propositions are enabled by their “target-oriented compounding” approach. They look at the final product and its desired properties and can then go back through the supply chain to ensure those targets are met. Because there are many types of plastic that cannot be mixed. Veridis has developed a technique that can tell exactly what types of plastic there are in waste. This allows recycling companies to better separate the different types, leaving more new usable plastic. The focus is on optimizing the recycling stream, which still sees a predominance of fiber over plastics.
