Sulzer’s energy-efficient flow technologies are driving circular processes at the world’s largest water treatment facility. With a capacity of up to 7.5 million cubic meters per day, Egypt’s New Delta Treatment Plant is treating agricultural drainage water and wastewater from the region for reuse. The clean water produced at the plant will be reused to cultivate 1.2 million acres of arable land. Sulzer’s integrated solutions help treat water that is channelled along a 120 km-long waterway to support sustainable water management and food security for the area. Water scarcity is a growing problem. UNESCO estimates that 26% of the world population – some 2 billion people - do not have safe drinking water and 46% lack access to safely managed sanitation. UNESCO also projects that the global urban population facing water scarcity will double from 930 million in 2016 to 1.7–2.4 billion people in 2050. This has led to an increased focus on solutions to avoid this significant (and growing) freshwater deficit. Desalination is one such solution for municipal, industrial, and agricultural needs in countries needing new water sources. For decades it’s been hoped that seawater could be desalinated at scale, to provide drinking water and irrigate crops. But desalination plants still only provide a fraction of the world’s fresh water, largely because they’re expensive to build and use a lot of energy. The application of Fertilizer Drawn Forward Osmosis (FDFO) in oil palm production to desalinate POME and reuse the desalinated water for irrigation/fertigation can help resolve the issues of water scarcity and the indiscriminate discharge of Palm Oil Mill Effluent into the environment. Compared to traditional desalination techniques, the FDFO desalination technique significantly reduces energy consumption so utilizing this strategy within the framework of the Water-Energy-Food (WEF) nexus holds great promise for addressing water scarcity for food production while avoiding any trade-offs with other sustainability pillars. As a low-energy technology that can be powered by renewable energy, FDFO is adaptable and flexible enough to be used for various far-off applications and its application in oil palm production can be improved via the use of oil palm ash as a draw solution.
