🌟 Meet Emily, a passionate science teacher who embarked on a transformative Summer Project journey with us! 🗨️ "I would 100% recommend Summer Projects. I gained more than I thought I would. I found it really interesting," she shares. 📚 Emily dove into researching Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) policies and parental engagement strategies, contributing to improvements in schools. "Our work has made it easier for schools to quickly find gaps and make changes that will massively improve their own policies and practices," she reflects. 🗨️ "Sometimes schools can feel pretty isolated. Our work highlighted how crucial the connection between head teachers, staff, and other schools is." Beyond policy impact, Emily discovered ways to engage with parents proactively, "I've established things I can do as a classroom teacher to better support my pupils." ⚡ Ready to explore, learn, and make a difference in your teaching career? So proud of my summer policy interns!!! Their team just completed a successful presentation of their policy proposal to members of the RI House Policy Office. Check out their topic below: Chronic absenteeism has become a significant issue in Rhode Island, with 28,653 students (20% of public school students) marked as chronically absent for the 2023-2024 school year. Within Rhode Island, chronic absenteeism can result in loss of funding, lower standardized test scores, and increased costs to combat this issue. To address this issue, we aim to develop a multifaceted approach that tackles the root causes of chronic absenteeism. This policy proposal explores various dimensions contributing to absenteeism, including socioeconomic factors, transportation, safety concerns, and physiological and medical needs. By providing the necessary support to students and removing blockages to school attendance, RI youth will then earn their education and become part of the workforce in our state, boosting our overall economy and state health. To appropriately address the issue of chronic absenteeism in our state, it is imperative to look at the many facets that affect this demographic of students.

On Wednesday, June 5th, we are partnering with Tracy Armstrong, founder of Blue Star College Planning, to host Navigating Complexities of College Planning. Navigating college finances involves a myriad of complexities, from deciphering tuition fees to managing living expenses. The rising cost of tuition coupled with additional expenses such as textbooks and housing can create significant financial strain for students and their families. Moreover, understanding financial aid options, scholarships, and student loans adds another layer of intricacy to the equation. Balancing academic pursuits with part-time work or internships further complicates the financial landscape, requiring students to make strategic decisions to sustain their education without accruing excessive debt. 📣 Today, Teach First have released a report outlining the challenges of attracting Gen Z into the classroom. ⬇️ All of these findings correlate exactly with my experiences of working with the students, recent graduates and young professionals that form Gen Z. The report isn’t all doom and gloom though! Firstly, some fantastic things are already happening across the sector when it comes to recruitment and retention. The report also sets out a clear set of opportunities to bring about change and ultimately transform how teaching is perceived. Looking forward to the discussions to come!
📰 Today we've released a new report that sets out how we can attract Gen Z to teaching. We commissioned Public First to poll 16 to 24-year-olds on their attitudes to careers, particularly teaching. 📊 The research found that a significant pool of Gen-Z have an initial interest in the teaching profession but many want a less linear career and would value professional experiences from different sectors. This group believe it would be easier to do something innovative in a sector outside of teaching. We can change this perception by expanding professional development opportunities for teachers, including secondments to relevant industry sectors outside the classroom, enabling them to return with new skills, enthusiasm, and energy. 🔗 Our Summer Projects connect current and past Teach First trainees with non-sector based professional development. It’s an opportunity to build on career development objectives and take new skills back to school. Adopting this approach through a central pot of funding, innovative partnerships with businesses, or international education institutions could deliver this at a national scale. Important research from Teach First, with useful suggestions to make teaching more attractive to Gen Z. The recruitment and retention crisis is a worry for all schools, but it disproportionately affects schools in deprived communities. Measures such as enhancing financial incentives and increasing flexibility will help to provide additional incentives to ensure that the best teachers are able to work in the most disadvantaged schools. Tackling this crisis must be a top priority.
