I'm back from an awesome vacation with several new post ideas swirling around, - BUT FIRST - What airline do you prefer? I usually fly Southwest or United, but lately they've both left me wanting. Forbes compiled a list that proclaims Alaska, Skywest, and Spirit (?!?) as the top 3 "best" airlines. Delta ranks number 1 for reliability, and after getting home about 4 hours late last night thanks to multiple United delays (we even got standby on an earlier flight that ended up getting delayed longer than our original, already delayed by 2 hours flight!), reliability and being on time are certainly my top considerations to switch. Alaska Airlines has made an intriguing move by acquiring Hawaiian Airlines. What's particularly noteworthy is that they intend to keep the two airlines as separate brands. This strategy minimizes disruption to operations and reduces standard integration costs. Additionally, it offers Alaska's leadership the opportunity to experiment with long-haul and widebody flying without interfering with their core operations, which could result in new growth opportunities. The acquisition also enhances their ability to manage market swings and protect against hostile takeovers. #airlines #consolidation

Are you on board with the rankings? ✈️ WalletHub’s new report revealed the top airlines in the United States for 2024. Ranking the nine major domestic airlines plus one regional carrier, WalletHub assessed them across 13 key metrics in categories like baggage and departures, in-flight comfort and cost, and safety. After leading for two years, Delta Air Lines now ranks fourth, with Alaska Airlines soaring to No.1, followed by SkyWest and Spirit.

If you're flying anywhere this summer and need to make a connection en route, maybe give yourself an extra hour over and above the minimum connection time if you're flying Air Canada or WestJet. And if you're flying Porter, make it an extra two and a half hours. And if you value on-time performance, try Delta or United. This little analysis is courtesy of an R script I wrote analyzing the estimated on-time performance of 10 airlines at seven major Canadian airports, including their subsidiaries and feeder partners. Southwest S*cks & Scr*ws Customers, But Blue Skies Tampa Departure - IMRAN™ The shameful way Southwest Airlines $©®w€$ passengers where it has no major competitors turned me off from this airline I was loyal to for a quarter century. They literally gouge passengers going from Florida to Long Island, New York. If they charge $200 Tampa to expensive LaGuardia Airport NY, where Delta Air Lines offers great competing service, Southwest charges (for example) $350 to nearby Islip MacArthur Airport which is maybe just 10 extra nautical miles of flying — and has much lower landing costs. And you’re lucky if there’s one nonstop available without going through nightmare BWI airport. Why? Because there’s no actual Delta Airlines service to KISP Long Island for a decade or more. And Southwest, famous for flying danger Boeing 800 MAX planes, exploits people in such areas. From a frequent flier on Southwest Airlines for ~25 years, I’ve become someone who is only using it as a last resort to use up my 100,000 points. Beyond that, I consider it an airline that doesn’t “LUV” but sc*ws its passengers. This was a beautiful day to depart Tampa. The SWA flight cost about a quarter of my balance. Couple more “free” flights like this and I’ll be done. The U.S. Department of Transportation has published the rules for the new beyond-perimeter (1,250+ miles) slot proceeding at Washington Reagan National Airport. Four slot pairs are for incumbent carriers American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue, Southwest Airlines, and United Airlines; and one pair is for limited-incumbent carriers Air Canada and Alaska Airlines. It would seem Spirit Airlines is out. This is what airlines have so far said publicly they will seek: • Alaska - 1 pair for San Diego • American - 1 pair for San Antonio • Delta - 1 pair for Seattle • Southwest - 1 pair for Las Vegas (with continuing same-plane service to Sacramento) • Spirit - 1 pair for San Jose Applications are due by 8 July. #airlines https://lnkd.in/d4RWnSPa

I though this FlightGlobal article was excellent in covering the key points for the #airlineindustry in 2024. If I had to quibble, I might respectfully add a couple more points that I am watching. (1) Economic growth, and whether demand in Europe and North America continues to defy gravity Wile E Coyote style, (2) the impact of higher #interestrates on balance sheets and costs up and down the airline value chain, (3) the impact of continued #privateequity activity in the sector. https://lnkd.in/ggYj5MhP
