In a McKnight's Long-Term Care News guest column this week, I shared my perspective on a topic that I’m especially passionate about – leadership development. Did you know the oldest members of Generation Z are turning 27 this year? Many have already launched their careers, so it’s critically important that we’re doing everything we can to welcome Gen Z into the long-term care industry with wide open arms. At the Good Samaritan Society, we’re seeing firsthand as motivated Gen Zs take leadership roles into their own hands and make meaningful contributions to our profession. We’re setting them up for success by tailoring our leadership development and training programs, and we’re seeing that pay off as we support 10 leaders who are currently going through our revamped Administrator-In-Training program. According to a recent Deloitte survey of Gen Zs in the workplace, six in 10 Gen Zs (61%) believe they have the power to drive change within their organizations, and roughly nine in 10 (86%) say having a sense of purpose in their work is very or somewhat important to their overall job satisfaction and well-being. We have everything to gain and nothing to lose by embracing Gen Zs while they are on the doorstep of the professional workforce. These leaders are talented, creative and motivated to do good. Let’s do everything we can to help them find fulfilling careers in long-term care and then support the heck out of them while they grow!

Motivational Monday: 4 years ago i embarked on a journey i never thought would be so #transformational. Much of this success was from 1 amazing human who saw my #vision and helped me bring it to fruition… the King himself - Rollis Fontenot III In a short period of time with the support and mentoring of Rollis, i built and taught an emerging leadership course at a time where leaders where suffering the most to find their own identity and secure the retention of new grad #nurses The balance of being a #CNO and #teaching during a pandemic was tough but incredibly rewarding. Looking back - it’s been nearly 2 years since my last cohort and with the amount of inquires now, i am tempted to find the energy and time to transform these leaders again! This course not only taught leaders across the country and from multiple #healthcare systems together in 1 virtual room, they had to deliver and present a KPI to bring back to their organization. Some of these leaders are still connected and sharing shamelessly the work they are doing. THIS is what it’s about! Building bridges - riding the waves 🌊 together and knowing that we are all facing the same #challenges AND WE DONT HAVE TO BE ALONE leading as a new leader! I’d love to here your thoughts. Going from 20-30 emails a day to over 100 in just a decade paints a vivid picture of how the demands on administrators have escalated. The comparison between academic leadership in the 1970s and the 2020s is telling. While leadership has always been demanding, the current climate of "toxicity and overwork" is pushing many to their limits. Average leaders focus on speaking: picking the right words, timing the message, learning the audience. While, amazing leaders focus on listening. Let me share 3 skills to be a better listener: 😶 Pause before you speak. Take a minute and let someone finish their thoughts. Say, 'Is there anything else you want to share?’ 🤔 Avoid assumptions. Avoid jumping to conclusions when facts are limited. Be curious & let others speak. Say "Can you explain your thoughts in more detail?" 😡 Mind your emotions. When fueled with strong energy, it's easy to explode with words. Take a break from speaking; listen to others. Slow your breathing. Don't worry only about what you say. Last week, I was invited by President Toyin Tofade, MS, PharmD, BCPS, CPCC, FFIP to speak to faculty and staff Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences about the importance of leading with vision.
