The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality is tracking more than 1,700 former industrial sites across the state. These sites present a powerful opportunity for Virginia: we can redevelop these lands with solar, meet the state’s energy needs, and support vast economic development while preserving Virginia’s most precious natural and agricultural resources. Other countries are leading the way with urban greening, urban forestry and access to nature such as the USA with its inspiring inflation reduction act. The act looks to green areas with low canopy cover and high deprivation as it recognises that people who live in areas of low canopy and with limited access to nature die younger which is just not right. Meanwhile in Wales we are going in completely the opposite direction. Cutting key front line roles at our public visitors centre and the last remaining posts that promoted greening our cities as this is just not seen as core business for NRW! All this is going to do increase pressure and costs longer term in the Welsh NHS. NRW has always struggled to understand the need to green our urban environments and loosing educational roles previously means public engagement is going backwards. This should not be happening but perhaps this is an opportunity to look and see if this function should be moved into the Welsh NHS. We need to look at access to nature, greening an health in a different way. Research shows us that early interventions work and could ultimately save the Welsh NHS money in prescriptions. There is so much opportunity in Wales it's just being missed. Eluned Morgan. #UrbanForestry #PublicEngagement #HelpingCommunities #Healthoutcomes

Community and industry are united in opposition to a proposed carbon capture and storage (CCS) project in the #GreatArtesianBasin. Leading organisations from across the state including the Queensland Farmers' Federation, the Queensland Conservation Council and the Local Government Association of Queensland have made their message clear: Do not gamble on the GAB! The Great Artesian Basin is one of the world's most magnificent water producing natural assets. CCS in the GAB is not a climate solution and the state and federal governments must apply the precautionary principle to reject any further attempts to develop CCS projects in the GAB. The Queensland Government must say no to CCS in the Great Artesian Basin. #NaturalAssets #WaterSecurity

Good news for people and nature in Massachusetts! As part of the state government's “Forests as Climate Solutions” Initiative, the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA) released a report containing recommendations for enhanced, climate-oriented forest management practices for Massachusetts. It emphasized the importance of keeping forests intact by enlarging forest reserves, increasing permanent conservation efforts, and reducing the conversion of forests to other uses. EEA is allocating $50 million to support the state’s mandated emissions reduction requirements, including, as set forth in the Clean Energy and Climate Plan, conserving 40 percent of the Commonwealth’s natural and working lands by 2050. EEA will invest this funding in forest conservation and incentives that encourage municipal and private landowners to adopt climate-oriented management approaches. https://buff.ly/492UqnF #conservation #newengland #northeast #landconservation #wwfc #massachusetts

Our food systems increasingly rely on groundwater, a resource that is both invisible and rapidly declining. While the long road to groundwater sustainability is difficult, reducing our irrigated footprint can positively transform landscapes and rural communities. Initiatives like California’s land repurposing program highlight the potential for repurposed farmland to benefit people and ecosystems alike. As EDF’s Ann Hayden says, “we need to embrace what this means not just for our relationship with all the water we can’t see, but also for the beautiful, potent land we have the privilege to live with every day.” https://lnkd.in/gCxnUn59

Why do the big carbon standards are so costly? Simply because a lot of money is flowing towards intermediaries and costly auditing companies. Why not develop local carbon protocols that route 90% of the revenues from carbon offsetting directly towards the local communities? https://lnkd.in/gmDCF4Nk

🌊 The Murray-Darling River System: Historical Data, Fish Kills, and Algae Blooms 🌊 In our latest video, we explore some of the most pressing environmental challenges facing the Murray-Darling River System, specifically focusing on the historical data surrounding fish kills and the rise of blue-green algae blooms. 🐟💧 Key topics we cover: The disturbing trend of increasing fish kills and what this data tells us about the river’s declining health. How blue-green algae impacts water quality, agriculture, and ecosystems. Real-world data and case studies that highlight the growing frequency of these events. Potential conservation strategies to mitigate these issues and restore the health of the river. This is a must-watch for anyone passionate about environmental conservation and sustainable water management. Let’s work together to find solutions that protect both this vital ecosystem and the communities that depend on it. 🎥 Watch now: #MurrayDarling #FishKills #AlgaeBlooms #WaterConservation #EnvironmentalChallenges #SustainableSolutions #ConservationEfforts #Australia CSIRO Australian Government Tanya Plibersek https://lnkd.in/g7FvXUUm
