Prioritizing Pedestrians: Why Urban Design Should Focus on Pedestrian Experience In the hustle and bustle of our cities, the pedestrian experience often takes a backseat. It’s time to change that. Health and Well-being Cities designed for pedestrians promote physical activity and well-being. For example, our work on the Marine Drive promenade in Mumbai has provided a scenic and safe walking route, encouraging more people to take leisurely walks, jogs, and enjoy the seaside breeze. Safety First Prioritizing pedestrians can drastically reduce accidents. Our recent installation of well-marked pedestrian crossings and signal poles in Dadar has made it safer for people to navigate busy intersections, lowering the risk of traffic-related incidents. Vibrant Communities Walkable areas boost local economies. Our street furniture and lighting project in MG Road, Bangalore, has turned it into a thriving hub where people love to shop, dine, and socialize, fostering a vibrant community atmosphere. Sustainable Living Pedestrian-friendly designs support environmental sustainability. By creating green pathways and reducing reliance on vehicles, our projects like the eco-friendly street lights in Pune contribute to lower carbon footprints and cleaner air. Cultural Engagement Pedestrian zones enhance cultural engagement. The decorative elements and public art installations at Connaught Place, Delhi, have transformed it into an interactive space where people can explore and connect with the city’s cultural heritage. At Suncity Innovations, we believe that a city designed for pedestrians is a city designed for life. Let’s build urban spaces where walking is a joy, safety is a given, and communities thrive. #urbandesign #pedestrianexperience #sustainablecities #communityliving #suncityinnovations

🚶♂️🛣️ Footpaths are more than just pedestrian pathways! They act as gateways to urban life, breathing social and economic vitality into streets and transforming them from conduits for movement into bustling public realms. Investing in Footpaths that are safe, accessible, and well-kept is crucial for cities, not only for the immediate benefits of mobility but also for the broader impacts on public health, environment and social cohesion. The illustration captures our vision for Khader Nawaz Khan Road in Nungambakkam Chennai, reimagined as a pedestrian-priority destination within the city. Construction of this project commenced in September 2023 and we are eagerly looking forward to its successful realization! 🤝🌟🛣️ Read more: https://lnkd.in/dMn9qAhx ITDP - India I Greater Chennai Corporation I Chennai Smart City #streetsforall #TenderSURE #completestreets #walkability #publicspaces #streetdesign #urbandesign #chennai #jusp #Chennaimegastreets

“Inadequate safety elements, and unscientific design of road infrastructure, increases the likelihood of vehicular and pedestrian conflicts leading to crashes and fatalities. Civic authorities must consider holistic road safety measures,” points out Chetan Sodaye. Road safety measures such as improving road signage, enhancing pedestrian infrastructure with marked crossings and refuge islands, and deploying speed calming devices like speed humps and raised intersections make streets safer by design for all – especially for vulnerable road users like pedestrians and cyclists. Incorporating policies that allow design consultants to take up such projects, and implementing these measures, at the right locations, is key! WRI India is supporting two initiatives in Bengaluru that follows these principles - ➡ #NammaRaste, an initiative by BBMP, that looks at designing climate resilient and safe streets: https://shorturl.at/ouKX7 ➡ #Suraksha75, initiated by BBMP and BTP, aims to redesign 75 high risk junctions: https://lnkd.in/gCNpycZG 📖 Read why Bengaluru roads need safety upgrades in the Bangalore Mirror here: https://lnkd.in/gCBvWSqM #SaferbyDesign #WRIRoadSafety #SaferByDesign #ClimateResilience #UrbanDesign #Sustainability #CityPlanning #ClimateAction

The fabric that gets woven when historic cities like Pune get overlayed with new urban layouts fascinates me. It also throws up interesting wayfinding challenges. Dhanukar Colony is one such neighborhood in Pune. The first time I went there, I got lost, my auto kept going in circles till we found the house I was looking for. Low internet connection meant we had already missed the left that we were supposed to take 10 seconds ago. Solving such navigational challenges in Wayfinding & Signage usually starts with assigning a Wayfinding model to the space, again based on it’s layout — Kevin Lynch’s theory of urban legibility. Let’s find out what could work for this quaint neighborhood in Pune. #wayfinding #wayfindingmodels #navigation

Gurugram's Golden Horizon. The wind whispers of change in Gurugram. As a real estate veteran, I've seen cityscapes morph and markets dance, but rarely have I felt such tangible electricity as here. This dynamic metropolis is on the cusp of something big, and the ground hums with the promise of urban evolution. The driving force? Infrastructure, the lifeblood of any city. Dwarka Expressway and Southern Peripheral Road throb like arteries, while the veins of RRTS and DMIC promise to weave a web of seamless connectivity. These are more than concrete and steel; they're magnets for business, talent, and a yearning for a connected lifestyle. And where demand flourishes, real estate takes root. The mid-housing market, that sweet spot where aspirations meet affordability, is where I see the heart of Gurugram's growth. With diverse projects mushrooming across key locations like Dwarka Expressway and Sector 37D, the city is shedding its monolithic skin, embracing a mosaic of residential options. This growth is no haphazard sprawl. It's a strategic ballet, where micro-markets cater to specific needs and aspirations. Each project becomes a brushstroke in a larger canvas, painting a vibrant picture of a city that caters to every dream. This city's future is as bright as the sunrise over Aravalli Hills. And I, for one, can't wait to see what masterpiece unfolds on this golden horizon. The intelligent use and management of parking facilities is essential to economic growth in the 21st century. Technology is also allowing more cars to be stored in smaller spaces where that is cost effective. As long as tech companies’ self-driving dreams await fruition, parking structures are still the best way to house vehicles en masse, but they do not have to be monolithic concrete blots on the landscape. Architects are transforming them into works of art with innovative facades. Here are five unique parking structures, from around the globe.
