Head of Media & Communications at Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce | Helping businesses tell stories through clear and effective communications | Podcaster | Former sports journalist
Great to hear Jamie Joyce and Warwick Wakefield share the story of Flexeserve's expansion into the Americas at the Greater Birmingham Transatlantic Chamber of Commerce's breakfast event with the US Embassy. As Transatlantic Chamber president James Tait said, every time we hear from the hot-holding experts, there's a new angle or development. They key takeaway from yesterday's discussion? Choose your location wisely when setting up Stateside. From a trade perspective, the US is effectively 50 different markets in one. Of course, the different states boast their own advantages as locations to set up shop - geography, lifestyle, gaps in the market and the various financial incentives offered by local governments and trade bodies. But a resounding piece of advice from our panel was to go where your customers and your future workforce are - even if, as is the case with Flexeserve and their Texas headquarters, you're setting up in the same region as a competitor. Thanks once again to HSBC for hosting us at their impressive UK headquarters in Birmingham city centre. #transatlantictrade #selectusa #flexeserve #globaltrade

Today, Chris Golby, PhD, Lumien’s CEO is attending the exclusive British Chambers of Commerce Future of the Economy Boosting Skills event alongside noted luminaries such as the Rt Hon Baroness Nicky Morgan and Baroness Ruby McGregor -Smith CBE Packed with insights, the event has yielded a couple of especially pertinent ones: In Q4 2023, 59% of companies didn’t have a staff training plan, and 76% faced severe recruiting difficulties*. We don’t believe in coincidences. Those businesses who fail to deliver education, L&D and training as a naturalised component of their EVP, are typically the businesses whose cultures arise from a lack of development, guidance, expectation and accountability. Wholly organic cultures that risk perpetuating the struggle in attracting, hiring and most importantly retaining more of the right people to thrive, even in favourable economic conditions. An example of this is the Hospitality industry, where culture is often spoken about as being key, but isn’t always resourced, activated nor followed through on. So it’s no wonder that 82% of firms in the hospitality sector reported significant challenges in hiring staff*. And by “significant challenges”, we mean the inability find, hire and keep any talent, let alone the right talent to thrive. As the Rt Hon Baroness Nicky Morgan puts it “Lifelong learning opens up new opportunities, helps create personal fulfilment, and enables us to play our part in a thriving economy.” *Future of the Economy - British Chambers of Commerce – People and Work 2024

Our 7th Business Manifesto has been launched. An incredible document which outlines the 5 main priorities that the Chamber will focus on for 2024, as indicated by our members. Another exciting year ahead for the Chamber - bring on 2024! #tvcc #thamesvalley #chamberofcommerce
On Friday evening, at our Annual Dinner at Windsor Castle, we launched our 7th Business Manifesto. Framed by 5 main priorities, the 2024 Manifesto sets out the issues and challenges faced by the Thames Valley business community and the opportunities that our membership wants us, it's Chamber, to work on and champion. These are - 🗨 Infrastructure network resilience and adoption – promoting the opportunities of the technology and supporting investment that can future-proof our region. At our International Technology Conference at 3M on May 9th 2024 we will aim to prepare the readiness of Thames Valley SMEs for developments and implications of Artificial Intelligence. 📚 Shaping our future skills needs – implementing the next steps of the Local Skills Improvement Plans (LSIPs) and shaping the future of the Thames Valley Skills Unit. Our work will continue as we spearhead British Chambers of Commerce (BCCs) national evaluation of the Chamber led Local Skills Improvement Plans (LSIP) and promote the merits of new curriculum co-developed between local business and educators. In response to the skills shortages, we will launch new training to support local businesses in their recruitment, retention, upskilling, and workforce development. 🌍 Pathway to net zero (and climate change) – advancing the work around sustainability as outlined in our State of the Region report. 🚢 Trade and Inward Investment – Delivering services that enable high value and volumes of trade and inward investment continues to flow. We will redouble our efforts on behalf of the business community to promote the Thames Valley as a leading international location through a refreshed and focused presence on our website. With new trade consultancy and value-added services, we will continue to champion opportunities for local businesses in key markets and deliver the national BCC hub for the Osaka 2025 World Expo. 📢 Delivering regional leadership, championing the Thames Valley – putting and representing businesses at the heart of stakeholder engagement and political decision making, ensuring they invest in success, and that we promote our wider sector and market strengths. The scope and influence of the Thames Valley Assembly continues to grow as we amplify the voice of our regions key industry sectors, and businesses large and small. We will contribute to the new BCC National Business Council and to the wider development of the UK Accredited Chamber network as the voice of local economies. You can read the Manifesto here 👇 https://lnkd.in/e998JgjS #tvcc #chamberofcommerce #thamesvalley #business

Retaining high-performing talent a business imperative and a competitive advantage. And yet talented women still face many disadvantages - at work and in life. Perhaps that’s why Gen Z are demanding different outcomes from work. According to research from Oliver Wyman and The News Movement, gone are the days of a “career for life”. If work is not working for them, then they’re out with 62% of Gen Z actively or passively seeking new jobs. Famously focused on transparency and values, 78% see lack of transparency as the biggest frustration during recruiting (post your policies!!). Work has to fit with peoples values. I’m delighted to be back speaking at the Women in Work Summit, on 26th September at Kings Place. I’ll be returning to quiz a group of #GenZ workers on what they’re looking for when it comes to the world of work. Is the workplace fit for purpose? What are the dreams and aspirations of the new and next generation? How can we redesign the world of work? WiW, Co-founded by Mariella Frostrup, focuses on the hard business cases, the solutions, and the measurable outcomes of implementing better policies and practices for women. Also there will be speakers including Miriam Gonzalez Durantez, Shaheen Sayed, Tamara Lohan MBE, Gary Adey, Edwina Dunn OBE, Prerana Issar.
