It’s been a busy month of events in Hong Kong with a client event and exhibition in the studio and Hong Kong Managing Principal and Global Urban Infrastructure Sector Co-Leader Peter Morley participating in a panel discussion and presentation at the city’s popular design-focused event, the bodw+ conference. The series of Hassell events and talks explored the theme Radical Rethinking: Sustainable development models for Hong Kong's future. Discussions focused on the convergence of four factors in the city and some radical solutions to address them: • A looming oversupply of new grade-A buildings • A large amount of buildings coming to the end of their lifecycle • The housing shortage that plagues Hong Kong • Planned construction of new infrastructure corridors and substantial new urban development known as the Northern Metropolis, integrating Hong Kong with Shenzhen “Hong Kong has the infrastructure and the density to enable it to become one of the most sustainable cities in the world. Through our content we’ve explored some models that would support this and address some of the issues that will be central to Hong Kong’s future,” said Peter. This week, we continue our look at the Six Qualities of Great Urban Places. The third quality: Richly Diverse. Diversity − both human and ecological − is a key indicator of the health and resilience of a place. From cities to forests, and suburban neighbourhoods to wetlands, diverse places welcome a wide variety of activities and users. In doing so, they can enrich the environment and create more productive, collaborative, and inviting ecosystems. At Park Avenue Central in Shanghai, we’re bringing together the best of natural and urban elements to create an oasis in the city. Eighty per cent of this sustainable development site is green space, offering residents and visitors a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gr7-U6Qs In San Francisco, engaging community and creative storytelling are the keys to the success of our Colma Creek project where we’re literally breaking down concrete barriers to restore an urban waterway into a healthy habitat and unlock its potential to connect people with the creek and bay. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/ddpZQYT2 In Chengdu, our Master Plan for Pandaland creates an authentic habitat and immersive trail to tell the conservation story of China’s venerated giant panda. We see visitors not as tourists but as explorers, giving them a variety of opportunities and sites to learn about the environmental challenges facing China’s national treasures. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dJwRyJCf 🔗 Explore the Six Qualities of Great Urban Places https://lnkd.in/gPp3hcsH #PlacesPeopleLove #UrbanDesign #SustainableCities #PublicSpaces #CityShaping #LandscapeDesign #EnvironmentalRestoration

Baltupiai, stuck in the late '70s Soviet modernism, prioritizes quantity over aesthetics. Despite mature greenery, it has a sleepy atmosphere with little individuality or community engagement. We branded a new real estate project, adding a new context to this district rather than denying its past. Named after a historic village and stream, Baltupis offers a fresh start, celebrating individuality and community. 🟪 "You can be yourself here, but never feel alone" highlights the project's amenities and human-centric architecture, while Baltupis logo blends history and modernity, symbolizing transformation. The result—branding that captures the Vilnius city's vision, the developer's perspective, and future residents' aspirations—a vibrant district pulsating with urban life. When people think of Japan, especially #Tokyo, they usually picture modern and futuristic buildings and some historical temples and shrines. However, there is another type of area that is becoming more and more popular. We call these #shitamachi, streets or neighborhoods that have maintained a 20th-century atmosphere despite #Japan's post-war reconstruction and modernization. https://rb.gy/9idp0

LESSONS FROM AROUND THE WORLD: In Hong Kong I learned the balance between memory and prophecy I lived in Hong Kong for two years, more than a decade ago and I loved it! As I walked through the bustling streets of Hong Kong, I was struck by a city that seamlessly blends the ancient with the ultra-modern. This city, a place of skyscrapers soaring towards the future, still holds tight to its rich, spiritual roots. Embracing the Old and the New Hong Kong is a city of contrasts. Here, next to towering glass structures, you’ll find centuries-old temples. These historical sites are pockets of tranquility amid the fast-paced urban environment. The city’s duality taught me the importance of blending tradition with innovation in my designs. Quiet Moments in Lively Places Despite its reputation as a finance powerhouse, Hong Kong’s spiritual sites offer serene escapes where history and modernity meet. The calm of incense-filled temples amidst the city noise showed me how spaces can connect us to the past while moving us forward. Nature and City Life The natural beauty of Hong Kong—from the quiet harbor views to the lush trails of Victoria Peak—reminds us that the best designs consider their environment. Hong Kong’s geography has shaped its architecture, proving that development can complement nature, not just consume it. Balancing Design with Tradition Living in Hong Kong, where Feng Shui and Taoism influence everything from skyscraper placements to business dealings, has influenced how I approach my projects. It’s about more than aesthetics; it’s about making spaces that feel right and flow well. Hong Kong’s blend of old and new is a lesson in balance. As designers, how can we integrate this harmony into our work? How can we design for the future without losing the essence of what came before? #DesignThinking #HongKongLessons #CulturalContrasts -- Enjoy this? ♻️ Share the post with others and follow me for more. 🔔 📸 by Andres Garcia
