You work in a clinical environment where you are the quieter member of staff, you get on with your job, take on the extra work, stay late and keep your head down. You definitely are not the shouty type but that has an impact. It demonstrates to others that there isn’t a problem. How come that quietness then affects your confidence levels? How come it starts to make you feel you perhaps aren’t good enough, because it takes you longer to do something as you think it through. Compared to other extrovert people….. How come that knock to your confidence then makes you feel your capability is affected? Capable for what? A clinical task? A much-needed dialogue with an extrovert alpha male/female staff member? How come you’ve now started to think you don’t fit in anymore and its time to find another job? Wow! What happened? Can you see how your thoughts and emotions can spiral out of proportion? What happened to your passion? What changed? Or perhaps what didn’t change? As a senior nurse or AHP, something has made you question your role, your place in a team and your position on the hamster wheel of healthcare. Perhaps you were exposed to something that compromised your values that you didn’t realise at the time. How many of those points resonate with you? Are they all triggered from one occurrence, the straw that broke the camel’s back? Or is it just a steady grinding down of multiple events that got you to your current position? Notice the fall out of all those beliefs, how they are cascading through your life and keeping you awake at night. Be reassured, you are not on your own and there are solutions! Though I’m not licensed in these states, I took a quick look at the job posting. $70K for a full-time therapist position. It explicitly states full licensure required and must be available 40 hours per week. If you’re interested in this job, I would highly recommend asking about how much time you’ll be providing direct therapy services throughout your 40 hours of availability. Since it’s salary, you probably want to know what that expectation looks like. Also, determine if it’s weekend/evening requirements, a typical 8-5 job, or there’s flexibility in creating your schedule. For fun, I looked at the corporate openings: Operations Associate II, Clinical Expansion 2 years experience and no clinical requirements Salary range: 68K - 104K Both of these jobs are fully remote and offer all the additional compensation packages of healthcare, timeoff, private stock equity, etc. Why are therapists, the ones doing the actual work with a bachelors degree, master’s degree, and at least two-three years of experience to gain full licensure (approx 9 years worth of time, money, effort, education, experience) being compensated at lower rates? Because we’re willing to accept it.

For individuals in recovery, there may be barriers to obtaining and sustaining gainful employment due to a prior criminal record, negative educational histories, technology illiteracy, gaps in employment history, financial complications, and stigmatization of those with a history of addiction, among other factors. A number of programs and organizations work to address one or more of these factors that bar individuals from gainful employment, whether that be through job coaching, placement, or skill development. Today we're focusing on Employment Based Services! A systematic, rigorous review on workplace interventions to address alcohol problems suggests that individuals receiving these interventions report improved drinking, drinking-related (e.g., increased motivation to reduce drinking), and other health outcomes. Importantly, however, many of the studies had methodological problems (e.g., individuals randomized to the intervention condition did not necessarily receive it or, on the other hand, those randomized to the control condition may have been able to access the intervention). More research is needed to determine optimal strategies to help individuals with substance use disorder in the workplace.
