Today, July 26th, is Disability Independence Day! Disability Pride Month was officially recognized in 2015, marking the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The #ADA was a huge step forward in ensuring civil rights protections for folks with disabilities. While it's a time to celebrate, it’s also a reminder of the ongoing work needed to achieve full inclusion and equality. Despite the progress we've made so far, plenty of barriers still exist that prevent people with disabilities from fully participating in society. These can include physical barriers, like inaccessible buildings and transportation, as well as attitudinal barriers, like discrimination and misconceptions about disabilities. It's Disability Pride Month! Join us in celebrating diversity through disability. Learn from people with disabilities whose voices are loud and proud. You don't know what you don't know. One such person is Theo W. Braddy from the National Council on Independent Living. On this day, we celebrate the lives of persons with disabilities and salute their determination. July is Disability Pride month. Instigated by the Americans with Disabilities Act on July 26th 1990 and has since become recognised across the world. Though there has been considerable strides forward for those with disabilities, stigma, barriers and a lack of accessibility continues to exist. And the wide range of support they need to thrive in every aspect of their life. In the UK in 2023 there were 10.21 million people of working age with disabilities in the UK. Of those only 24% were in employment, the main barrier being there access needs being met. Accessibility is the practice of making information, activities, and/or environments sensible, meaningful, and usable for as many people as possible. It’s not hard and it’s not rocket science, We lose the opportunity to work with so much talent when we fail to make our workplaces accessible. #DisabilityPride #DisabilityInclusion
