According to this new Brattle report, California has more than 7.5 gigawatts of Virtual Power Plant (VPP) potential — huge! VPPs are dispatchable aggregations of distributed energy resources and load flexibility, including solar + storage, smart thermostats and demand response. The biggest contributor to California’s 2035 potential is behind-the-meter energy storage followed by smart thermostats. I wonder what New York’s VPP potential looks like, and how many billions of dollars in avoided transmission, distribution and peaker plant costs a VPP buildout could save ratepayers… New York is on the cusp of launching its own energy storage incentive programs and they can’t come soon enough! We’re also advocating for NY to modernize its residential solar tax credit to include energy storage and to enable direct pay for low-income families. Building a cost-effective, equitable, carbon-free electric system requires imagination and a programmatic approach that harnesses private industry and consumer action.
