Demand-flexibility offers interesting collaborative approach amongst the water and electricity utilities in India
Several of us have been exploring means to create enabling implementation structures to assist Government of India’s aspirational RE targets. Globally, integration of RE in the grid is known to pose challenges. Practitioners are exploring multiple ways to integrate infirm renewables in the grid. Simply put, there is a clear need to use RE as and when it gets generated in addition to technical interventions such as pumped hydro, battery energy storage systems, and thermal energy storage (in built environment and cold-storages). In addition to storing the infirm and intermittent RE, it is imperative to wisely modulate demand-side to play tango with RE generation profiles.
In the recent past, a nice experiment at scale (and not a pilot) got implemented by one of the largest water utilities in India (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation) and TATA Power – one of the licensees serving a large pumping station in the city. The Times Of India on 15 March 2024 reported the results of a demand flexibility initiative explored by the electricity utility where water pumping was ramped-up in the solar hours. Such efforts offer an opportunity to lower the cost of pumping operations with least possible investments. Kudos to the engineering teams at BMC and Tata Power who pulled this experiment together. Our team at MP Ensystems Advisory Private Limited (Kaustubh Arekar, MT Arvind, and Anoop Kulkarni, PhD) was thrilled to be a part of this recent development and act as enablers in this process that has immense replication prospects in India and elsewhere. Heartiest congratulations to the Tata Power team led by Dr.Neelesh Kane and Sujata Guruji!
Several other individuals are already acting as co-conspirator to take such examples forward and I would like to take this opportunity to invite colleagues to contribute to such simple but impactful demand flexibility initiatives in India and other parts of the world!
