Wednesday’s Words Build transferable skills I often come across candidates from other industries in r lines of business who apply for positions with the bank. Although direct experience with the roles they are applying for is greatly valued, so too are the transferable skills they have created in previous roles. Candidates from other areas also bring a great diversity of thought and add new fresh ideas. Leadership, employee development, personal connections, and deepening of client relationships are key areas, which mastered, can add value in a new profession. Yes, but can he hit the curve? In baseball as in all sports those who can ultimately separate themselves from those who can’t. There are a number of checks along the way from little league to the major leagues with one significant differentiator being the ability to hit a good curveball. A lot of guys can sit back in the batter’s box and lay in wait for a fastball out over the plate. But if you want to have a distinguished major league career, unless you pitch like Sandy Koufax or field like Ozzie Smith (you can look them up) you’re going to need to learn how to deal with a major league curveball. The workplace is the same way. Pretty easy to show up everyday and make your contribution when things are moving along as expected. Discipline and high quality work product can take a person a long way in the steady-as-she-goes environment. Certainly the paychecks should keep coming. But curveballs get thrown at work, too. Can you hit one? Or a series of them? My ex-colleagues at Citi Private Bank are having a lot of curveballs (and change-ups!) thrown at them every day. Those curveballs coming in the form of leadership changes at the same time the bank puts more focus on investments and investment advice and less emphasis on lending. As you may have read these curveballs include some pretty significant layoffs. And the bank may find itself shrinking the business before it can grow it. As I built my career, first in the building materials business and then in financial services, I always prided myself on being able to hit the curve. When there is a lot of stress in the business one can distinguish to the upside simply by showing up everyday with a positive attitude and getting the work done. Not being pollyannish necessarily but recognizing that the organization is moving in a different direction, embracing that new direction, and then helping the organization navigate its way to that place. Great reward (job security, respect, promotion, appreciation, compensation, etc.) can come to those on the right side of that equation. But it’s difficult and exhausting. I timed my exit from Citi with this last round of off-speed pitches. The bank had been so good to me over the years and I really loved our team but I also recognized that this round of change required a level of sustained energy and commitment I no longer was prepared (capable?) to deliver. So I gathered up my equipment, said some brief goodbyes (me famous for the French exit), and came home to spend more time with my bride. To my friends at the bank: now is the time to distinguish yourselves to the upside. The bank is looking for its next group of leaders. Our business is so much a people business and the bank needs you now more than ever. Great impact will be rewarded in multiple ways. Now is the time to dig in and drive that curveball all over the park.

Ten years is a long time to do anything. In 2024, it seems like an especially long time to spend in one organization. And yet it feels like just a moment ago that I walked into the Regions Center on my first day. How is that possible? After ten years and some change, I am approaching the end of my time at Regions Bank. As I look back on the last decade, a few things stand out: 1. Relationships - Teammates, Leaders, Mentors, Friends. I will miss the good people that make Regions great. 2. Culture - You can’t fake good culture. It demands intentionality and requires a lot of effort to instill and nurture. Regions has *it*. 3. Success - I took on a few different roles during my tenure, spending time in the Management Associate Program, Private Wealth Management, Ops & Tech, and finally, the Consumer Bank. At each stop, I was surrounded by high-performing individuals whose focus was never diverted from making life better for associates and customers. There were too many wins to even begin to count. I could not have chosen a better organization in which to start my career and grow as a professional. Thanks to all those who played a part in this wonderful experience.
