If you're not surveying developers on their productivity yet, you're lagging behind. 📉 How can you boost productivity if you don't know where you stand? Crafting effective surveys is key. It's essential to measure developer productivity both qualitatively and quantitatively, keeping in mind who your real "users" are — your developers. 👩💻👨💻 Developer productivity isn't just about the easy-to-measure stuff like pull requests or deployment frequency. You need the "hard" data that's simple to track and the "soft" data about how developers feel about their work and what's holding them back. Start gathering insights from your engineers to understand and enhance productivity. This dual approach will keep you ahead of the curve. 🚀 How do you measure developer productivity in your team? Drop your thoughts in the comments! 💬 #DeveloperProductivity #SoftwareEngineering #Devex

Delightful features are awesome, but they must be balanced with some unglamorous “dirty work,” which includes tackling tech debt. Imagine you are a customer that spends 40% of her week working around clunky system limitations? ⏳ Manual data entry 🔄 Data re-entry because the system didn’t save it 🤹♂️ Creative workarounds for daily tasks the system can't handle ⏰ Setting your phone alarm for when a background process finishes All sounds frustrating, right? Imagine getting a highly anticipated release with delightful UI features like smart defaults or animated transitions. Lovely, isn’t it? 🎉 Umm... not really if 40% of your productivity still gets swallowed up by system limitations. 😖 💡 Only actual end users can tell us what their biggest pain points are, so there has to be a continuous feedback loop to ensure we are resolving them. Have you experienced any frustrations balancing delighters against getting “dirty work” done? #TechDebt #UserFeedback #Productivity #WisdomFromNadia

This week I'm posting about some of the pitfalls my team and I have run into as citizen developers, and things you can do to avoid them - hopefully I can prevent some headaches for some of you. Today, I'll talk about our evolving approach to testing. We used to be pretty vague about how we conducted our testing. "Have a look and tell us if it's right" is about what we'd say to our stakeholders. Then we'd wait to hear back. Meanwhile, we'd do all the rest - propose the user stories and write them up, including the requirements, do the development, develop training, even do some testing ourselves. We acted like their data concierge. The result was that, aside from prolonged testing and development timelines, our stakeholders were often not very engaged. Their testing was often superficial, and then we'd find out weeks or months later that they weren't really using what we built for them, because there was something wrong, either with the data or the design. But we've made a lot of progress correcting this recently: 1. We clearly define the stakeholders' roles in the development process: they're responsible for testing and training, and we expect them to meet with us at least bi-weekly for review sessions. 2. We define timelines for testing and try to hold them accountable (if I'm honest, we're not great at this yet - but at least in principle, it's what we do). 3. We're better at identifying edge cases and testing them before going live. We're not quite at the level of true unit testing, but we're getting closer. 4. We have a template for tracking UAT inputs and fixes. As you may have gathered, we still have work to do in this area, but it's much better than it used to be. If you have other approaches that have worked for you, please share! Tomorrow I'll be posting about change management and what we do to ensure adoption. #analytics #data #nocode #lowcode #citizendevelopment

-- Let’s talk about connections! (Not referring to the rom-com genre, sorry! 💔 ) -- We're talking about connections between various modules of a software solution! -- Sure, it sounds simple enough to build, but once the data & requirements start surging ... -- …Things don’t feel simple anymore. While it might not be the easiest issue to handle… -- …Experienced teams have evolved their own practices for these scenarios, specifically. -- Being an experienced team with decades of experience ourselves, we thought - -- “Why not share this wisdom with the ones thinking of building a robust and scalable solution!” -- Who knows! Maybe we might get an opportunity to collaborate as well! 😉 #binaryfolks #softwaredevelopment #productdevelopment #apidevelopment

POLL: What software do you currently use that is more difficult or time consuming than it should be? For bonus points share how you would make it better! Most of us spend a lot of time in tools that are supposed to make our lives easier and allow us to be more efficient. Sometimes they deliver on that promise, but other times they get in our way or they don't talk with other products we use and we end up having to do duplicate work or look in multiple places. As a software developer, I've always loved the idea of being able to automate or improve someone's life or business by writing code and designing intuitive user interfaces. We have so many tools at our disposal, but I still constantly run across people who are using outdated technology or having to do things manually. I'm curious what problems you run into in your day-to-day work -- maybe there is a way to solve them. #softwaredevelopment #businesssolutions #uiuxdesign
