💡Limiting Ultra-Processed Foods Alone Won't Guarantee a Healthy Diet A recent study presented at #Nutrition2024 highlighted the importance of factors beyond just the level of food processing. 👉 Minimally Processed Foods and Health: The study revealed that consuming predominantly minimally processed foods, as defined by the NOVA classification system, does not automatically ensure a healthier diet. The specific types of foods we consume may hold more significance than the degree of processing they undergo. 👉Cost and Shelf Life: A menu emphasizing minimally processed foods was discovered to be more than twice as expensive and had a shelf life three times shorter than a menu with ultra-processed foods, without delivering any additional nutritional benefits. 👉Quality of Diet: The research illustrated that it is entirely possible to maintain a low-quality diet with both minimally processed and ultra-processed foods, emphasizing that both types of diets can be equally nutritious or non-nutritious. 👉Nutritional Misconceptions: Surprisingly, some nutrient-dense packaged foods are classified as ultra-processed by the NOVA system, including unsweetened applesauce, ultrafiltered milk, liquid egg whites, and certain brands of raisins and canned tomatoes. 👉Need for Better Characterization: The study underscores the necessity for the nutrition research community to better characterize the concepts of "ultra-processed" and "less-processed" foods, suggesting that building a nutritious diet involves more than just considering the levels of food processing. isn't it safe to say ❓ "Not all processed foods are unhealthy, And not all minimally processed are super healthy" Courtesy of USDA-ARS #ASN #processedfoods #healthy #food #eathealthy #eatright #healthychoice

How to assess the nutritional value of a food product. When you assess the nutritional value of a food product, you're essentially trying to understand how much nutrition the food has compared to its calorie content. You want to know how much of each nutrient (like vitamins, minerals, and fiber) you're getting per serving, and how many calories you're consuming. The goal is to choose foods that are high in nutrient density (like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins) and low in calories. This can help you maintain a healthy weight and meet your nutrient needs without overconsuming calories. Now that you understand what assessing nutritional value means, let's talk about why it's important. Knowing the nutritional value of a food can help you: 1. Make healthier food choices. 2. Maintain a healthy weight. 3. Meet your nutrient needs. 4. Prevent nutrient deficiencies. 5. Reduce your risk of chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers. There are several ways to assess the nutritional value of a food product. Here are a few methods you could use: 1. The Nutrition Facts label: This label is required by law on packaged foods in most countries. It provides information about the nutrients in the food, including calories, fat, sodium, and vitamins. 2. The Glycemic Index: This index measures how quickly a food raises your blood sugar levels. Foods with a low glycemic index, like most fruits and vegetables, tend to be healthier choices. 3. The Whole Foods Approach: This approach focuses on choosing whole foods, like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, over processed foods. Whole foods tend to be more nutritious and healthier overall. “Superfood” is a buzzword many food and beverage companies have adopted in marketing. While the celebrated foods are generally good for you, consuming them as a smoothie powder may not have the same health benefits. Nutritionists warn that many of these red or green powders overshoot the daily recommended nutrient intake and may not be worth the hype. Learn more about what’s in superfood powders, whether they work, and how supplement brands can be more transparent on the blog.
