🪦 Yesterday marked the end of an era in the video game industry, with the Entertainment Software Association announcing the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) is shutting its doors permanently. 📣 Following a social media post and an online article in The Washington Post, the ESA's president and CEO, Stanley Pierre-Louis, shared the fateful news with the gaming community, emphasising that "companies now have access to consumers and business relations through a variety of means, including their own individual showcases." 💡 This does not come as a surprise. In recent years, E3 became increasingly challenging and expensive to host and organise, with several AAA developers and publishers distancing themselves from the event to focus on unique events and features that propelled their brands further while reducing the risk of getting lost in the constant news tide. 🔝 The emergence of online events and showcases before the COVID-19 pandemic – first as a marketing experiment, then forced by necessity during the lockdowns – put the final nails in E3's coffin, with more protracted, effective venues such as Geoff Keighley's The Game Awards and Summer of Gaming becoming safer places to do business. 🫠 Nevertheless, we can't help but feel saddened by the loss of what was a landmark of the video game industry, the definitive place to be around when doing business, meeting with co-workers and peers, or just having a good time celebrating what is now the leading entertainment sector worldwide. 🥂 Cheers to you, E3.
