Madeline List provides an insightful overview of the #Phocuswright Europe 2024 #sustainabletravel session on balancing culture and the economy, joined by experts Sally Davey, Mateu Hernandez Maluquer and Shannon Guihan. This was such a fantastic lineup for a #sustainabletravel discussion I moderated at Phocuswright Europe. It focused heavily on finding a balance between high economic yields from tourism and livability for locals (not an issue we'll solve overnight, but one our leaders are thinking critically about). I am also proud to announce that this helped me accomplish my super secret goal of reducing the degrees of connection between myself and Prince Harry. Top takeaways from each panelist: - Sally Davey of Travalyst: Embracing the pillars of good communication is absolutely fundamental, or tourists will not understand the broader impact of their choices. - Mateu Hernandez Maluquer of Consorci de Turisme de Barcelona: Marketers need to encourage travelers to see their choices as investments, with all the mindfulness (and care for a product) that investments entail. We live in a world where people put more research into buying a $1000 iPhone than where they go with their $1000 plane ticket. - Shannon Guihan of the The Travel Corporation: Tourism isn't meant to just "happen" to a place. Managers and stakeholders need to co-create their model -- and they will see early warning signs of issues and opportunities to correct in more collaborative environments. https://lnkd.in/ePWXAWPT

Has European Tourism Reached a Breaking Point? This summer, European hotspots faced overcrowding, heat waves, and resident backlash as international arrivals surged past 2019 levels. So, what’s next? Gavin Eccles highlights the need for a new, #sustainable approach to #tourism, leveraging tech solutions and #AI tools to: - Encourage travelers to explore lesser-known destinations. - Use apps like Florence’s “Feel Florence“ to manage crowds in real time. - Implement dynamic pricing and gamification to spread visitors across times and locations. By embracing innovative strategies, the industry can reduce the strain on popular spots, support local communities, and create a better experience for everyone. It’s time to rethink how we travel. Leave it to the experts! 360info approach on the overtourism phenomenon.
I was recently invited to write a news article on the topic of overtourism, and I approached it with complete honesty 💪🏻. Here are my main points: ❗ There is currently no reliable agreed-upon scientific method for measuring "overtourism" or to demonstrate when it has been reached. ❗ The term has become a buzzword, often used for various ideological agendas, appealing to everyone from turbo-capitalists to Marxists. ❗ This indiscriminate use of the term, lacking scientific backing, threatens destinations that genuinely experience severe negative impacts from tourism—particularly in developing countries. thanks to 360info and Giuseppe Francaviglia for giving me the chance to speak my mind. colleagues, get talking 🚨 #overtourism

How algorithms create mass tourism hot spots. It’s been a while since I was a media student, back when we consumed content passively and in more linear ways. Today, everything is driven by algorithms. They don’t just show us trends, they create them. A viral post, a stunning beach, and suddenly, the destination is overwhelmed. It’s no longer about the place; it’s about the attention. The more engagement a location gets, the more it’s amplified. But what happens when the algorithm keeps pushing the same destinations? The pressure builds. Locals struggle with overcrowding, and the experience of the place is diluted. Meanwhile, travelers chase after the next viral spot, only to find that they’re following a path everyone else is already on. They forget to look for alternatives, for the quiet corners that still offer something real. In the end, they may never find it, the journey that’s truly different. Because they’re too busy chasing what’s already been found. Article in comments #tourism #tourismindustry #travel #travelindustry #traveltech

A few years ago, I had a conversation with a local guide in a small town that forever changed my perspective on tourism. They told me: "When visitors come here, they’re not just seeing our landmarks—they’re stepping into our story. If we tell it right, they leave as ambassadors for our home." That stuck with me. As someone who works with destinations worldwide, from bustling cities to hidden gems, I’ve come to realize that the heart of tourism isn’t marketing. It’s connection. 💡 But here’s the challenge: How do we preserve that authenticity in a world increasingly driven by digital transformation? This is where innovation steps in—not to replace the human touch, but to enhance it. Imagine: AI that curates personalized journeys, tailored to a traveler’s dreams. Virtual tools that allow people to “try before they fly,” building excitement for their adventure. Data that helps communities grow tourism sustainably, ensuring the stories of tomorrow are even richer than today. 🚀 At Passporter, we’re working with over 80 destinations to make this vision a reality. But we know we can’t do it alone. To my incredible LinkedIn network: 📌 What’s one game-changing idea you believe will shape the future of tourism? 📌 How do you see your destination or organization adapting to meet the evolving needs of travelers? Let’s start a conversation that inspires change, sparks collaboration, and showcases the incredible work happening in this space. 🌟 And if you’re curious about the tools and strategies driving tourism innovation, send me a message—I’d love to share insights. Together, let’s reimagine the way the world travels. 🌍✈️ #Tourism #Innovation #SustainableTravel #DestinationMarketing #FutureOfTravel
