Nest analysis under the scorching sun?🌞 Totally worth it! 🙌🏻 The experience, the teamwork, and the purpose behind it make it unforgettable. Right after the analysis, we ensured the hatchlings were kept in the dark to conserve their energy for their crucial journey to the ocean.🐢🌊 Every effort counts when it comes to sea turtle conservation.🐢🫶🏼

Today is Natura 2000 day! 🌟🌳 💚 Natura 2000 is the the largest network of protected areas in the world: it was created 32 years ago today and over 27 000 nature sites are protected through this network by EU legislation, like the Birds and Habitats Directives. The sites cover almost one-fifth of land and one-tenth of surrounding seas, including several strictly protected nature reserves, and habitat types such as forests, grasslands, wetlands, and coastal and marine habitats. Three projects from BirdLife Partners are currently running as finalists for the European Natura 2000 Award! 🐺 Natuurpunt, BirdLife Flanders, formed the Wolf Fencing Team Belgium (WFTB) to aid over 1,080 livestock owners. This success inspired similar efforts in neighboring regions, fostering harmony between humans and wolves. 🌊 DOPPS - Birdlife Slovenia is restoring the River Stržen after it was altered for agricultural purposes in the 20th century, rerouting a 2.1 km stretch of the river back to its natural meandering flow. 🦉 Through their Nature Guardian project, SEO/BirdLife and SPEA - Sociedade Portuguesa para o Estudo das Aves have trained over 1,500 law enforcement agents and created tools to catch and report environmental crimes in Spain and Portugal, reducing wildlife deaths by 62% in Spain and increasing the detection of environmental crimes by over 100% in Spain and over 80 % increase in Portugal. 🏆 Tune in next week on the 29th of May to find out the winners here 👉 https://lnkd.in/dxbz-BeK #Natura2000 #RestoreNature #ConservationSuccess 📸 Bittern in flight over Ključi (Photo by: Jože Papež). The Great Bittern is one of the various species being brought back by the DOPPS project in Slovenia; their nests are now thriving across an additional 215 hectares.

NEW REPORT with Irish Whale and Dolphin Group 🐳⛵️ Five-month operation surveyed +3200 kms of Cork, Kerry & Clare coast. Fresh concerns about lack of monitoring of inshore waters by the state and the latest piece of research pointing to harbour porpoise decline. Irish Whale and Dolphin Group Science Officer and Fair Seas Partner Rebecca Dudley says theirs is the latest piece of research that points to the issue: “Harbour porpoise numbers have been shown to be in decline off many parts of Ireland in recent years. We need more research to explore the drivers behind the decline but it is undoubtedly a cause for concern, given the importance of this species to our Special Areas of Conservation. It is disappointing to see that still no management plans for these supposedly ‘protected areas’ have been developed by the Government. It’s vitally important that additional state resources are allocated to this kind of research. We are lucky to have a group of dedicated volunteers working with us, but effective monitoring of what’s going on in the water off our coastline is a mammoth task and beyond the scope of groups like our own. If the Irish Government is to meet its target of protecting 30% of Irish waters with Marine Protected Areas by 2030, then monitoring must drastically increase along with robust management plans for all designated areas. The message is all the more timely given this Saturday marks #WorldOceanDay2024, which has ‘Catalysing Action for Our Ocean & Climate’ as its action theme”. #FairSeas #30x30 https://lnkd.in/dDEY9cG8

We are excited to introduce our first project leaders of 2025, Kernean George and Marcella Harris of the Dominica Sea Turtle Conservation Organization (DomSeTCO)! 🎊 🐢 🌊 Dominica is home to a rich and unique coral reef ecosystem that is critical breeding habitat for endangered hawksbill, green, and leatherback sea turtles. Its marine habitats, an integral component of the greater Caribbean ecosystem, face threats such as coastal development and illegal sea turtle hunting. Marcella and Kernean’s MCAF-supported project will provide sea turtle husbandry and ecotourism training to staff members of the Rosalie Conservation Center, enhancing ongoing efforts to monitor and protect Dominica’s endangered sea turtles. The DomSeTCO team will also focus on education and outreach, engaging coastal communities on the cultural and ecological significance of sea turtles and the coral reef ecosystem. We are grateful for all of their work establishing locally powered, long-term conservation solutions to protect sea turtles and their habitat in Dominica! #HQWW®week2024 ACCOBAMS & Pelagos Agreement are grateful to responsible operators conducting sustainable whale-watching activities in the framework of the HQWW® Code of Good Conduct. in 2024, ACCOBAMS registered ‘High Quality Whale-Watching®’ (HQWW®) certification, developed in collaboration with the Pelagos Agreement, aims to raise awareness among whale watching operators to carry out their activities in an environmentally friendly manner and to foster the sharing of good practices and know-how to protect the marine ecosystem. The HQWW® ensures that whale-watching activities are conducted in line with an ecological approach so to avoid negatively affecting cetaceans observed. Application for HQWW® is voluntary. #France, #Italy and #Monaco implemented the HQWW® Certificate and entrusted MIRACETI, CIMA Research Foundation and Association Monégasque pour la Protection de la Nature with managing the HQWW® Certification of their national operators. 🌊🐠 As a consultant specializing in marine conservation and someone deeply passionate about sustainability and the environment, I am excited to share a significant achievement in marine conservation. Greece 🇬🇷 has recently become the first European country to ban bottom trawling within its marine parks, a crucial step toward sustainable fishing practices and biodiversity preservation in the Mediterranean. Bottom trawling, 🚢 🐟 known for its damaging effects on the ocean floor and marine life, is now restricted in Greece to protect our vital ecosystems. This move not only helps preserve marine biodiversity but also supports sustainable practices within fishing communities. Throughout my career, 🌎 I have extensively collaborated with various governments on marine conservation projects. Notably, my work with Tragsatec for the Spanish Ministry for the Ecological Transition involved monitoring Marine Protected Areas within the Natura 2000 network in the Mediterranean Sea. This project provided vital data to enhance environmental monitoring and management strategies, underscoring the importance of governmental policies in conservation efforts. 👉 These experiences have taught me the crucial role of effective stakeholder engagement and the integration of sustainable practices in governing Marine Protected Areas, similar to the new regulations we see with Greece's groundbreaking policy. As we tackle the complexities of marine conservation, initiatives like those of the Greek government serve as a beacon for global environmental governance, encouraging other nations to adopt similar measures. ❓ How can we utilize this momentum to foster international cooperation in marine conservation? What actions can we as a global community undertake to support such transformative policies? 💙 I encourage everyone to share their thoughts and join the conversation on how we can extend these efforts worldwide to ensure a sustainable future for our oceans. #Sustainability #MarineConservation #EcoFriendlyBusiness Read more about this initiative here: https://lnkd.in/g4X9-vXw
